The Dying Dream of the Nigerian Maritime Cadet Every year, Nigeria's maritime institutions produce a significant number of cadets with dreams of becoming skilled seafarers and maritime professionals. Approximately 1,500–2,000 cadets graduate annually from institutions like the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) in Oron, Nigeria Maritime University (NMU) in Okerenkoko, and other maritime schools. These graduates have gone through rigorous training in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, and other essential fields, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. However, the stark reality is that only a fraction of these cadets—20-30%—find placements on ships to complete their mandatory cadetship and sea-time training. This means that out of 1,500–2,000 cadets, only around 300–600 manage to secure spots on vessels each year, leaving the vast majority struggling to fulfill this crucial requirement for certification. Why is this happening? The shortage of placements is due to several factors: -Limited berths: The number of available positions for cadets on ships is nowhere near enough to meet the demand. -High competition: Nigerian cadets face intense competition from counterparts worldwide, often backed by more extensive partnerships between their institutions and shipping companies. -High costs: Securing a cadetship position is often costly, adding a financial burden to many cadets and their families. The consequence? Hundreds of cadets see their dreams stall, their qualifications incomplete, and their career progression halted. Without practical sea-time, these cadets can't obtain the necessary certification to advance as officers, leaving them in a state of limbo despite years of education and commitment. To address this, Nigerian maritime institutions and stakeholders must prioritize partnerships with shipping companies to expand sea-time opportunities and support cadets in achieving their career goals. A thriving maritime workforce is essential, and giving these cadets the support they need is a step toward that future. Carers Federation was proud to attend last week’s Learning and Work Institute event in London - a day dedicated to the experiences of Young Adult Carers in education and employment. The Quality Standard in Carers Support, designed by carers, aims to help organisations identify and provide ongoing support for carers, addressing the fact that Young Adult Carers are: - Three times more likely to be NEET (not in education, employment, or training) compared to other young people. - Four times more likely to drop out of college or university than students without caring responsibilities. - 38% less likely to gain a university degree than non-carers. This disparity is even greater for young people who provide high levels of care; those caring for 35+ hours per week are 86% less likely to gain a degree and 46% less likely to enter employment.
