AND HERE’S THE ANSWER… For anyone who has asked the question - “Why do we (Red Card) take our workshops into schools? “A £1 spin led to a £7 win” and that is all it took for Declan Cregan to get hooked on gambling at the age of 16. That first spin and win eventually cost him £500,000. Declan stole to feed his addiction and contemplated suicide at his lowest point. Oh boy do I know that feeling. It’s so difficult in this day and age for our children to remain children for as long as possible. They are exposed to so many temptations, alongside the more traditional peer pressures. Gaming is perceived as a ‘normal’ pastime, but it can be the start of a slippery slope. As highlighted by this bill in New York, I think education of risks (alongside resources) is so important in preventing gambling harms. Which is the same in any area of public health—take for example smoking. When a consumer goes to purchase a box of cigarettes, they are given quick and clear warnings on the outside of the box, such as risk of lung disease, cancer, etc. (this of course happened after many years of advocacy from public health professionals). Such transparency 1. raises awareness 2. educates on the risks and 3. allows people to make better informed decisions. Many people still don’t know the potential harms associated with gambling. The bill mentioned here in this post or similar policies would be interesting and helpful to consider implementing into other states.
