Did you know Sam has a hidden fascination with the British Royal Family? From palace intrigue to centuries-old traditions, it's a reminder of how systems and environments shape behavior, whether it's a royal court or a modern work environment. At DORIS, we apply a similar lens of human ecology to inform environments that reflect an organization's unique culture, just like the Royal Family's traditions reflect theirs. We believe that the environments people inhabit influence how they collaborate, thrive, and evolve. Who knew Buckingham Palace and your office had that in common? #DORISResearch #DORIS #HumanEcology #WorkEnvironment #RoyalInsight

Read this informative article from The Guardian to learn more about the Urdaibai Red Alert 🚨 and its implications for people and nature. Plans for a new Guggenheim Museum in Guernica’s #UNESCO-designated Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve have sparked concerns among locals and environmentalists. If the project goes forward, this protected area, a vital ecosystem for biodiversity and migratory birds, could be significantly impacted by an estimated 140,000 visitors annually. Environmental groups are concerned that the museum will disturb Urdaibai’s fragile ecosystems, while supporters argue it could bring economic benefits to the region. The situation highlights the complex challenge of balancing cultural development with environmental preservation, particularly in an area with such ecological significance. Additionally, on October 19, 2024, a large demonstration against the expansion of the Guggenheim Museum was held, drawing over 10,000 people. 📖 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gYewGHyv #Guggenheim #Urdaibai #RedAlert #Wetlandconservation

The amount of carbon that a peat bog can sequester is astounding, globally there is twice as much carbon locked away in peatlands as all the world's forests.
The Flow Country in northern Scotland, a vast and unique blanket bog ecosystem covering nearly 2,000 sq km, has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status after a 40-year campaign. This rare designation recognises the area's outstanding ecological and scientific significance, including its diverse wildlife and crucial role in carbon sequestration. The peatlands, formed over 10,000 years, contain an estimated 400 million tonnes of carbon—twice that of all British woodlands combined. This recognition is expected to boost conservation efforts and community engagement in protecting this vital landscape for future generations. https://lnkd.in/eKjfcDtb

If we lose our beloved heritage sites, we lose a piece of us. A part of our heritage and cultural identity. Sea-level rise is threatening Easter Island, located in the Pacific Ocean, 3,700 kilometers from the coast of continental Chile. Increasingly stronger waves are eroding the Moai, the island’s iconic colossal statues that represent ancestors, as well as the platforms on which they stand.... #traceability #climatefinance #financeinnovation #moai #rapanui #easterisland #coaching #chiefsustainabilityofficer #sustainability #esgconsulting #esgreporting #sustainablebusiness #sustainablearchitecture #successmindset

I am thrilled to share an article written by my grandfather, Gastone Ferlini, titled “L’Appennino Che Resiste” (The Resilient Apennines), which profoundly resonates with my academic and professional journey. This article delves into the deep-seated sense of belonging and identity through the lens of placemaking and cultural preservation in the picturesque Villa di Cedrecchia, a charming hamlet in the Comune di San Benedetto Val di Sambro. The narrative beautifully illustrates the resilience of this community amidst natural adversities and socio-economic challenges. It underscores the collective efforts of residents, volunteers, and local institutions in preserving cultural and religious heritage, ensuring the continuity of local traditions, and fostering community cohesion. As someone deeply invested in the fields of cultural studies, urban planning, and community development, this article strikes a chord with my belief in the power of place and memory in shaping our identities. The themes of resilience, community engagement, and the maintenance of cultural landscapes echo the core principles of my research and professional endeavors. I am incredibly proud to carry forward this legacy of passion and dedication to preserving our cultural and environmental heritage. My grandfather’s words inspire me to continue exploring and advocating for sustainable and inclusive placemaking practices. This piece is a testament to the importance of nurturing our connections to places and the shared memories they hold. It is a reminder that our roots and stories are vital in shaping resilient and vibrant communities. 🌿 Read the full article and join me in celebrating the resilience of the Apennines and the power of place in our lives. #CulturalHeritage #Placemaking #CommunityDevelopment #Sustainability #UrbanPlanning #Resilience #Identity #SenseOfPlace #ProudMoment

It’s difficult to put into words how happy this makes me! I spent years of my childhood living in Caithness and my family on the maternal side comes from a wee village in Sutherland. The power of pride in heritage is unmatched! And this recognition of the Flow Country as a World Heritage site is a landmark achievement for the celebration of natural heritage in Scotland. This country has some of the most beautiful blue-green spaces in the world - a biased statement of course but our natural landscapes are such a massive part of our history in how the clans lived, our present in how Scotland’s beauty is appreciated and our future in how we safeguard our survival in the midst of the climate and biodiversity crises. This status will deliver untold benefits for our country: 🌍 Peatland is the strongest carbon sink we have - protection of peatland will prevent catastrophic release of CO2 and enhancing it will capture even more. 🦋 This will ensure the protection and expansion of habitats for wildlife and increase the biodiversity which is vital to so many of the systems on which we rely. 🖼️ This will safeguard the Highlands’ connection to its history during a time which is obsessed with growth and grey, concrete development. 💪🏼 The conservation and landscape restoration will require training, skills development and job creation in a sector which will only explode in demand once it’s realised how vital this work is for our survival, meaning people who are trained up will have outstanding opportunities. When there are challenges and you feel like you’re banging your head against the wall, these kinds of stories provide the energy to keep going and have faith that we as humans will be able to rise to this challenge as long as we dare to try! Especially in a country which is famous for its inventions and innovations 🙏🏼
Breaking: Scotland’s Flow Country wins UNESCO World Heritage status! 🥳 This is huge. Including RSPB Forsinard Flows, the Flow Country is a vital carbon sink and habitat for precious wildlife. It's the first ever peat bog to gain this status, too 🏆 This is all thanks to fantastic collaborative work led by the Flow Country Partnership, including ourselves, NatureScot, the Highland Council and others. This all means the Flow Country will get the protection and attention it deserves. Congratulations to everyone involved!
