Last Friday, I had the honour to address a conference on #DigitalLiteracy and Multicultural Education organised by the Institute for Multicultural Integration, Dongguk University, Seoul, Korea (a long-time affiliate of mine). I emphasised the importance of integrating diverse experiences into a digital literacy framework. This integration can enhance education, promote cross-cultural understanding, and drive regional collaborations in Southeast Asia. However, I see firsthand how the #digitaldivide exacerbates educational inequalities, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive digital education initiatives. For me, #digitalinclusivity means more than just providing access to technology; it is about developing necessary digital literacy skills. 📌 Themed week on #Vision for the #WorldSightDay 🌎👓 Day 2 People with vision impairments in #Vietnam can now use "Vi Vu" TTS Voice, a text-to-speech software in the Southern dialect! This initiative is part of ATscale’s broader effort to develop text-to-speech (TTS) voices for under-represented languages and dialects to foster global digital inclusivity. #ATscale identified the need for these voices to address the commercial limitations faced by private IT companies, which have left many under-represented languages and dialects without adequate TTS support. Intercultural understanding is the foundation of #SDG17: Partnership for the Goals. At New Global Normal, we are committed to achieving global change through local action. Importantly, #interculturalunderstanding is a learned skill which we have captured in our unique framework. By empowering young people to be leaders in the promotion of intercultural understanding, our NGN chapters pave the way for a new era of global cooperation. Our framework distills intercultural understanding into three key attributes: 1. #CulturalHumility Cultural humility is when we are conscious of how our own culture and experiences shape the ways we engage with the world. It tasks us to challenge preconceived notions, practice reflexivity (be self-aware), and to be open to engaging with different perspectives. 2. #CulturalCuriosity Cultural curiosity is marked by a desire to learn, understand and expose ourselves to cultural backgrounds, perspectives and experiences that differ from those familiar to us. 3. #CulturalAwareness Cultural awareness is the knowledge we have of different cultures, customs, experiences, histories, values, and perspectives amassed through authentic interaction (either online or offline) with people or materials from these cultures.
