Seafood buyer participation in fisheries management decisions can support a more traceable, sustainable seafood industry 👉 https://bit.ly/3PZpa1K. Towards this end, we are working to ensure that seafood buyer voices engage decision makers in Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs). One example of this is our Korean Roundtable for Sustainable Tuna Fishing, which brings together Korea's largest and most influential seafood companies to jointly advocate for better management and operation of key tuna fisheries in the Western and Central Pacific Oceans 👉 https://bit.ly/4cZj1MB.

A NOAA Fisheries report revealed a $1.8 billion loss and 50% decline in profitability for Alaska’s seafood industry due to ongoing economic and environmental challenges—with impacts felt across America’s seafood supply chain. As federal lawmakers seek ways to strengthen the resilience of our seafood industry, #aquaculture offers a solution. By establishing a path forward for open ocean aquaculture, Congress can support the expansion of sustainable fish farming in U.S. waters, complementing our nation’s commercial fishing industry to increase our supply of locally raised seafood, create jobs and encourage investments in portside infrastructure in working waterfront communities. "Tuna is the most popular canned seafood; in fact, nearly three-quarters of the total global tuna catch ends up in cans. Continuing to meet consumer demand and ensure healthy fish populations for the long term requires strong fisheries management. This is especially true given the global scale of the canned tuna industry, which includes an extensive international supply chain that can make it difficult to effectively trace fish from boat to store and to enforce policies."

A statement from the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Wahyu Sakti Trenggono at the Indonesia Marine and Fisheries Business Forum 2024 mentioned that the global seafood market was projected to grow up to 8.92%. Aruna perceived the calculation as an attractive opportunity to further expand Aruna's seafood market share by delivering richer commodity variants for global demands. Strengthened by the number of the members onboard reaching more than 55,000 fishers, as well as its supply points covering 150 hubs all across Indonesia, Aruna was optimistic that it could broaden up its business coverage not only in global markets, but also domestic ones. Having Aruna's high-rank seafood commodities, such as tuna, crab, lobster, and other commodities, Aruna was well-assured to explore further to Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. Farid Naufal Aslam, the Co-Founder amd CEO of Aruna, said, "We see that data from the Global Seafood Market delivered by the Minister of MMAF is an attractive potential for Indonesia to be able to advance the fisheries sector. We will also contribute to making this happen." He continued, "Aruna is optimistic to create opportunities and markets for local seafood in the global market, this is evidenced by our supply strength that reaches 90% of provinces in Indonesia. Hopefully, Indonesian seafood can be increasingly known to the world and also local seafood export opportunities will also drive up." Digitalization and data management are 2 basic things that are the key to success for the Indonesian fisheries industry in particular. This is in line with the SEA for All Commitment 2030 that Aruna launched some time ago, one of which is in the implementation of traceability of fishery products. Traceability technology developed by Aruna, one of which serves to monitor the location of product capture areas. Meanwhile, in the internal business, Aruna also has a season calendar that serves to see the trend of the harvest season for a fishery product commodity. #SeaForAll

I'm grappling with the recent decision to ban open-net pen salmon fishing in British Columbia, considering Canada's significant reliance on farmed seafood. Instead of a ban, we should focus on investing in sustainable innovation and development within the sector, collaborating with current and new operators to build (and lead!) more resilient fisheries. Despite frequent discussions about overfishing, consumers are often surprised to learn where their fish comes from: 🐟 85% of Atlantic Salmon consumed in Canada is farm-raised. 🌊 75% of all seafood consumed in Canada is imported. 🌍 50% of all seafood consumed in North America is farm-raised. This ban suggests there are viable alternatives to meeting the growing demand for seafood, but global demand heavily relies on aquaculture (its 50% of total production). As consumers, our choices are limited: buy farmed or wild seafood, or reduce our consumption of fish altogether in favor of alternative proteins (noting that land-based fish farming systems are still in early stages). The ban will likely shift more salmon consumption to farmed imports, leading to thousands of lost jobs, increased pressure on already overfished wild stocks, and higher salmon prices. While open-net pen salmon fishing has its challenges, investing alongside industry into sustainable aquaculture innovation and development is a more effective approach. This ban shifts the problem rather than solving it - given that 85% of the salmon we consume is farmed.🌱 #SustainableFood #Aquaculture #FoodSecurity Power Sustainable Lios
