Each year, one in ten people worldwide falls ill from contaminated food. Tomorrow marks World Food Safety Day, the World Health Organization and FAO's annual campaign to raise awareness about food incidents and how to prevent them. This year's theme is "Prepare for the Unexpected." Food safety incidents are situations where food consumption poses a potential or confirmed health risk. They happen for many reasons, such as chemical contamination, unlabelled allergens, food fraud, natural events and microbial or choking hazards. Being ready to manage food safety incidents, however widespread they may be, requires dedicated efforts from policymakers, food safety authorities, farmers, food business operators and consumers.
