This week U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) hosted a workshop seeking input on the pathways to decarbonizing industries. ‼️A key fact framing the workshop was that 60% of emissions reduction needed to achieve net-zero in heavy industries by 2050 will come from technologies that don’t yet exist or are in the development pipeline. 📣 IEDO announced the launch of a new vision study looking at the barriers, pathways, frameworks and sector-specific solutions to scaling decarbonization in the industrial sector, building on DOE’s industrial decarbonization roadmap and commercial liftoff reports. It was wonderful to join colleagues from across industry, academia, and civil society (including our friends at Great Plains Institute) at the workshop to discuss challenges and solutions that will feed into the study. Supported by a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) INCITE Award, Professor Chris Wolverton will collaborate with Argonne National Laboratory to perform high-throughput calculations of thousands of materials properties at finite temperature. The project will leverage Wolverton's Open Quantum Materials Database, which supports new materials design by identifying candidate materials for applications like alternative energies and sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gXxkZPEx

A highlight out of 2024 for me is the development of the network of the Clean Energy Community Initiative. This effort evolved from a small partnership gathering for an NSF proposal, that did not get endorsed for submission, but now supports a very significant amount of Clean Energy deployment projects in Wisconsin. It is based on pervasive two-way engagement with communities and is centered around community driven technology selection and implementation. This represents a uniquely valuable space for our faculty in the College of Engineering to bring their technologies to aplication, addressing community priorities and needs. https://ceci.wisc.edu/

At the recently concluded TaiyangNews - All About Solar High-Efficiency Solar Technologies 2024 Virtual Conference, Alex Barrows, Head of PV at Exawatt - now part of CRU reiterated the general belief that TOPCon has surpassed PERC and will dominate the market for some time, if the capacity expansion plans of the various manufacturers were any indication. The integrated manufacturing cost for TOPCon has reached parity with PERC and is now even headed lower. For heterojunction (HJT), Barrows said that though it enjoys efficiency advantages, the technology is not likely to reach cost parity with TOPCon in the near future, unless there are aggressive cost-downs or a jump of 2.5% absolute efficiency improvement. Hence, it will likely remain a niche technology. But, the question to consider is what will follow TOPCon: back contact (BC) or tandems? In a time where customer expectations are high; where the grid is experiencing tremendous change; where industry growth and electrification are colliding within the energy transition- we remain squarely focused on the modern necessity of providing dependable, reslilent electricity that customers value. Value in terms of affordability Value in terms of increasingly clean Value in terms community place and purpose I get the privilege of representing Dominion Energy on a panel to discuss Drivers of Energy Demand Growth. As in most cases today, the issues are complex, the solutions are diverse, and persepctives range but one thing is clear: lights on are better than lights off.

Another great win for manufacturing in South Carolina. Princeton NuEnergy (PNE) will be opening the first Cathode Active Material (CAM) direct recycling #manufacturing center in SC. PNE recycles lithium-ion #batteries from #EVs, electronics, energy storage batteries, and manufacturing scrap. Their production focuses on lower cost and lower environmental impact. This is an $11 million investment that will create 41 new #jobs. #cleantechnology

Many congratulations to our Smart Cities and Infrastructure cluster member, Dr Gloria Pignatta, PhD on her 2024 three main achievements listed below: 1. ADA Award for outstanding achievements in research as member of HPA 2. Promotion to Scientia Senior Lecturer 3. Co-Edited and co-authored a book titled “Net-Zero and Positive Energy Communities: Best Practice Guidance Based on the ZERO-PLUS Project Experience” as the main research output of a project funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 program in 2015 focused on developing cost-effective strategies for constructing “net-zero energy settlements.”
