Global Alliance for the Future of Food’s Post

🌾Our partner, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, recently released a report showcasing the importance of the transition to agroecology and regenerative food systems.   Current investments in the transition to regenerative food systems are estimated at $44 billion per year, with many farmers, fishers, food producers, governments, and companies supporting agroecology and regenerative approaches. If a ripple effect at behaviour change could be supported maybe current funds could be used better? In the US for example, one of the biggest polluters and producers of food - small targeted grants or low interest loans with educational and biological support could speed up this process? #regenag #transition

Humanity needs to give back to nature as much as we take away from it. Giving and receiving is and has always been a vicious cycle of interdependence between humankind and nature.

The fifth element of agroecology, recycling, supports multiple benefits such as supporting the autonomy of producers and reducing vulnerability to climate shock through closing nutrient cycles and reducing waste products. ‘Cultivating Change Gathering: Regenerative and Agroecological Food Systems Transformation’ this was a one-week international conference that brought together over 120 leaders from around the world to scale and accelerate regenerative and agroecological food systems transformations.  An ambitious transition to agroecology and regenerative approaches can reverse biodiversity loss and increase food security. 🌿 Celebrating Biodiversity Day with Root2Res! 🌾   Root2Res helps us understand the interrelations between agricultural systems and their environment, providing access to a wider range of crops and supporting biodiverse, resilient production with knock-on effects on the food value chain. Our focus encompasses understanding functional biodiversity (above and below ground), effective knowledge and innovation systems, and ready-to-use solutions for land managers, adapted to specific conditions.   The project will focus on three crop types common in rotational systems in Europe: Cereal, tubers, and legumes. Through Root2Res, farmers gain access to a wider range of crops and breeds with a broadened genetic base, enhancing biodiversity and resilience in agricultural production. 🌍🌾 #BiodiversityDay #Root2Res #SustainableAgriculture

Red Flags of Agroecology: Monocultures and large-scale single cash crop systems These industrial approaches lead to uniformity in agriculture, which makes farms more reliant on synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, and the preventive use of antibiotics. This has serious consequences for the environment and food systems, from soil degradation to water pollution and biodiversity collapse. Monocultures also increase vulnerability to epidemics, crop failure, and other stresses due to the lack of genetic diversity. This can result in widespread contamination through runoff, erosion, and loss of wild biodiversity. Beyond environmental impacts, these systems threaten the health and economic security of farm workers, and can even lead to cultural erosion within farming communities. It’s time to shift away from monocropping and embrace more diversified farming strategies that nurture the land, protect biodiversity, and build stronger, more resilient food systems. #Agroecology
