I’m calling on everyone who has witnessed or experienced the consequences of restrictive laws denying women essential medical care. If you have letters, emails, or documentation of these cases, please send them to The Kolo: Women's Cross Cultural Collaboration (Kolo: WCCC). The federal government has shown no intention of addressing the harm these laws cause, leaving women and children vulnerable and without accountability. It’s time for women worldwide to organize and push back by building an international movement. We need pressure from global organizations, women’s groups, and communities across borders. Essentially, we need to create our own world government. Women will stand as the true advocates for human rights, demanding ethical standards and protections for all. Let’s create the accountability and change our systems fail to provide. Who wants to support and help -- be an advocate. Women will no longer be silent. https://lnkd.in/g-mZvSZN

Former Chief Magistrate, Her Lordship (Rtd) Ugonna Ezekwem, made a very salient submission. According to Her, we are not lacking laws to ensure the implementation of non-custodial approach, what we lack is the willpower & resources as well as the benefits that will flow. This issue oftentimes, leads to minor/petty offenders incarcerated ahead of trial coming back to the society more criminal minded than before. As a Nation, we can take examples from countries like Norway, which boasts of 50 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants. If we adopt a more reformative approach, we will see a drastic reduction in the number of cases awaiting trial. Data has revealed the marginal nature of persons awaiting trial. from about 75% in 2015 to 73% in 2023. A large chunk of the budget goes to feeding the mammoth crowd. Other practical steps like the "Tokyo rules" and "Bangkok rules" which focus on guidance and gender perspectives should be considered. Imprisonment should be a last resort while the three Rs (Reformation, Rehabilitation & Reintegration) should be practiced more. Thankfully, the Nigerian Corrections have set up a "Restorative Justice Department" which shows eagerness to actualise these recommendations and kick back Injustice in the Justice sector. Truly engaging disussions!

In 2024, #politics remains a male bastion. Across the globe, only 27% of members of parliament are #WomenMPs and less than 1 in 4 parliamentary chambers is chaired by a woman. What has been steady progress, is now slowing down. By 1 October 2024, the percentage of seats held by women in national #parliaments had progressed by only 0.1 point since the start of this so-called “super election” year. How can parliaments and other stakeholders step up their action to prevent and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence offline and online, including violence generated or facilitated by #AI? What effective strategies and synergies are needed to build a sexism-free, violence-free public space? What targeted support and tools can be made available to women themselves in politics to counter the sexism and gender-based violence they face? Marking November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of #VAW, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, UN Women, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Council of the European Union and International IDEA are hosting a roundtable to discuss strategies and tools to support women in public life against #GBV online and offline. #16days More info ➡️ipu.org/GBV24
