Yesterday, IPIFF's Scientific Advisor, Zeynep Sinangil, joined the high-level event titled "The Future of the European Raw Materials Industry - How Can Europe Remain Competitive on the Global Stage?" 🌍 The discussions highlighted Europe’s continued dependence on imports of critical raw materials and the crucial role of enhancing recycling to reduce this reliance. Léon Delvaux from DG Trade underscored that, despite ongoing initiatives, the EU will remain dependent on imports, making the establishment of robust international partnerships essential to securing our supply chains and economic autonomy. MEP Hildegard Bentele called for a robust EU raw materials policy that prioritizes strategic projects, builds new partnerships, enhances the internal market for secondary raw materials, and significantly increases investment in recycling. Speakers also stressed the importance of retaining recycled materials within the EU, rather than exporting them, to strengthen European supply chains and reduce dependence on external sources. Nicoletta Zappatini from Olea Capital Limited underscored the EU’s potential in deep-tech sectors such as recycling, clean fuels, and advanced materials, which could play a pivotal role in addressing resource scarcity, supply chain complexity, and geopolitical pressures if adequately scaled. Additionally, Juan Antonio Aranzabal from the European Advanced Carbon and Graphite Materials Association (ECGA) noted the risks to the EU’s clean tech sectors, particularly battery manufacturing, without stable access to essential materials. With DG Trade overseeing 51% of EU GDP—the highest globally—regulatory changes are anticipated to reshape the raw materials landscape, underscoring Europe’s need for a resilient, self-sufficient recycling infrastructure. These discussions strongly underscored that a resilient, self-sufficient European raw materials and recycling infrastructure is not only desirable but imperative for safeguarding the EU’s long-term competitiveness and strategic autonomy. Many thanks to the organisers for the brilliant event and fruitful discussions! 🙏

📢 30th anniversary of IMA-Europe was about celebrations of past achievements, but even more about discussing the future of our sectors member companies, as well as downstream users, policy makers and society at large. David Rose, event moderator, opened the session with video message by Dennis Radtke (MEP of the European Parliament), highlighting: 1️⃣ #Essential role of minerals for our #everydaylife & #localeconomy ✅ 2️⃣ Need to keep strong #EUvaluechains within EU ✅ 3️⃣ The #CRMA is a right step in the right direction ✅ 🗣 Key takeaways from the high level session: 🎤 Hilmar Rode from Sibelco Group emphasised that all great societies extract and process raw materials. We operate in more than 20 countries, and we are welcome by the communities. However, he highlighted the slowing down of #EUindustry, while other geographical regions are moving ahead and very fast by attracting #investments and better framework conditions. He emphasised that de-industrialisation is not just stopping plants but also stopping investments to remain in EU 🤝 ✍ 🎤 Isabelle Barthes from industriAll Europe highlighted that plant closures and cutbacks, even in #greenenergy sectors, are becoming increasingly common. The urgent need for investment is stalling #decarbonisation efforts across industries that risk falling behind #globalcompetitors, particularly in a landscape of significant trade distortions. There is a high level of political ambition that is meet by austerity measures at national level. We need a #masterplan to change EU 🤝✍ 🎤 Heimo Scheuch from wienerberger highlighted that #EUpotential is great, and that we need to get things right. As an export-dependent continent, Europe must remain #competitive globally. It is a wake-up call for policy makers: #Industry vs #Regulation. Policy makers need to change attitude for industry to remain competitive! #Brussels needs to step up and support #entrepreneurs across the continent. Every plant leaving EU is not coming back! #EUindustry needs to survive. #PolicyMakers can not regulate what is not there anymore. Time to think & evoke change 🤝✍ 🎤 Ailbhe (Alva) Finn from European Liberal Forum emphasised that cohesion policy should support industrial value chains. A #CapitalMarketsUnion could be the catalyst for unlocking essential investments for our industries and governments 🤝✍ 🎤 Roger Doome from IMA-Europe said that industrial minerals are essential to our society and economies, yet the sector must strengthen #communication with #CivilSociety to highlight these materials' #VitalRole. Policymakers also must recognise that excessive red tape and #HighEnergyCosts undermine the sector's efforts to #decarbonise while staying #GloballyCompetitive. A decline will be real if changes in Brussels are not taking place in this new #LegislativeTerm 🤝✍ #IndustrialMineralsAssociationEurope #IMAEurope #Conference2024 #ResponsibleSourcing #MadeInEU #GreenDeal #IndustrialDeal #HighLevelRoundtable #Brussels
