For most companies, whether large or small, focusing on sustainability just makes sense from a business perspective. Saving energy saves money, that’s simple. There are countless other examples. When given the data, executive teams and boards will likely back it. Customers inevitably support it if sustainability aligns with their values and meets their price expectations. However, as our founder, Devry Boughner Vorwerk, often says, “businesses aren’t set up to succeed in sustainability.” The internal incentives are wrong. The way organizations are traditionally structured doesn’t support it. Some recognize there’s shared value for the company and society to create, yes. Still, the problem has been a lack of focus on shared values, which unite society and rally humanity to overcome the biggest issues of the day. Last month, DevryBV Sustainable Strategies hosted The Humanverse Summit: Adapting Business to 2030, where 80 business leaders shared insights and expectations for capital allocation toward the UN's #SDGs. Today we launch our 2023 Sustainability Report ‘Enhancing Everyday Life’ which brings to life our strong commitment to sustainability, showcasing examples of consistent innovation and a people-first approach. The Vita Group doesn't just manufacture products; we aim to lead the industry in driving positive change. 2023 marked a year of achievements in advancing our sustainability goals: - Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: We reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% compared to 2019 levels, exceeding our target of 46.2% by 2030. - Innovative Products and Services: We launched new products and services that empower our customers and partners to reduce their environmental footprint and enhance their social impact. - Investment in Sustainable Technologies: We invested in the development of sustainable technologies, enhancing our environmentally preferred feedstock capacity and reducing our product environmental impact. - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: We improved the diversity, equity, and inclusion of our workforce, with 29% of our senior leadership positions held by women – a positive trend but we know we have more work to do. Really enjoyed Day 1 of the Economist Impact events 9th annual sustainability week with my colleague Richard Walters. A great opportunity for learning and interesting discussion. Some of my key takeaways from yesterday: 🤝there is still a greater need for collaboration across corporates, competition, government, education, society as global citizens, to drive change 🏦 Businesses can be a catalyst for change by thinking creatively around partnerships and how they work with their supply chains 📚Education is key to ensure we are building a fit for purpose workforce - sustainability shouldn’t be an add-on but incorporated in all modules. Education also continues in the workplace, we need to leverage the knowledge and skills within our workforce 🛒Whilst different categories of consumer have varying degrees of knowledge on and appetite for sustainable led messaging, there was reflection that consumers still have a narrow view weighted in environmental impacts. Businesses need to think about how to bring consumers on the journey, tell the right story with full transparency and enable consumers to make the right choices wherever they sit on the income scale #economistimpact #sust2024 #sustainability
