The EU is important to the city of Espoo. According to a recent study by the Finnish Association of Municipalities, 45% of all decisions made by city governments were related to EU legislation, so it is important that cities are active players in the EU. Many of the EU's major goals, such as climate neutrality, are achieved in cities, where the EU's competitiveness and growth are also built.
This week, Espoo is participating in the annual general meeting of Espoo's most important European network, Eurocities , in Cluj Napoca, Romania. Eurocities is a peer learning and advocacy network of more than 200 large and medium-sized European cities, of which Espoo has been an active member for a long time.
Espoo has a lot to offer other European cities. For example, we create cooperation models between different organizations that implement the green transition concretely, and not just in party speeches, but in real city life, and by sharing and scaling these models elsewhere, Espoo's handprint is impressive. The plan created by the city of Espoo, Fortum and Microsoft to utilize waste heat from data centers as district heating for homes is the world's largest data centre waste heat utilization project and serves as a model for others. It is also an important part of Espoo's road towards carbon neutrality by 2030. Correspondingly, we learn important lessons and good practices from other cities. Cities are keys to the solution for most of the global issues, so we need to work together and we need to do it now.
The European elections are just over a week away. Use your voice!
