Last week marked the official kickoff of the 2024-2025 GPDC Leadership Academy in Augusta, starting with a special welcome dinner. Attendees were inspired by speeches from agency leaders including Executive Director Omotayo Alli, Chief Legal Officer Natalie Glaser, Augusta Circuit Public Defender Rahmaan Bowick, former Augusta Circuit Public Defender Kate Mason, and Leadership Academy alumnus John Wilson. It was a fantastic start for what’s shaping up to be our biggest and best class yet! The session, led by UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government, spanned two engaging days filled with interactive activities focused on sharpening leadership communication skills and fostering impactful connections. Our guest presenter, Piedmont Circuit Public Defender Donna Seagraves, spoke about "The Role of the Circuit Public Defender” tracing the agency’s journey from its inception to today. Her wealth of experience set the tone for our future public defender leaders! The GPDC Leadership Academy offers comprehensive training for public defenders to enhance their leadership skills. The program, led by experts from the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government @UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG), combines theory and practical workshops on strategic thinking, communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, and more. Participants engage in interactive exercises, case studies, and a capstone project, developing skills to lead teams, drive innovation, and effect positive change. Graduates gain the confidence and competence to assume leadership roles or influence their communities. #LeadershipAcademy #ProfessionalDevelopment #PublicDefense

ERG Leadership Alliance (ELA) wants to know if you know how to spot the signs your ERG leaders need some support 🤔 Proactively addressing these signs of struggle early is essential to revitalize tension of resource group leaders and ensure they continue to play a meaningful role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within your organization. These are some SUPER simple things to keep an eye on in order to spot where your ERGs might need help: ❗️Decreasing Participation Rates: A decline in attendance and engagement at ERG activities and events can indicate some employees are not finding value or relevance in the initiatives organized by ERGs. ❗️Lack of Leadership Support: Difficulty recruiting, training, engaging and retaining Executive Sponsors. ❗️Ineffective Communication and Collaboration: Not using, being aware of or underutilizing available communication channels, thus inhibiting collaboration among ERGs and other department and teams. ❗️High Turnover or Disbandment of ERGs: Potential underlying issues or challenges within the ERG structure or organizational dynamics that need to be addressed. Consultants will tell you "what" you should do to address and prevent these issues, but that doesn't help you if you don't know how! Sound like you’re groups? ELA might be right for you! State and local governments face an impending retirement cliff, with many experienced leaders set to leave in the coming years. To sustain operational effectiveness, it’s crucial to develop future leaders now, ensuring they can meet both immediate and strategic needs. Equally important is fostering networking across state, federal, and Department of Defense agencies, creating a collaborative knowledge-sharing environment that benefits all involved. In-person learning, especially within a focused two-day format, can be transformative, offering immersive, hands-on training that enables participants to quickly apply new skills in their workplace. This approach builds not only leadership capacity but also reinforces inter-agency relationships essential for long-term success. Amongst an action-packed week for The Liminal Space: Leadership Training and Development, a highlight was reconnecting with the inspiring team at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School (GMAS) in Busselton, Western Australia for the second phase of our leadership development journey! Hot on the heels of the success of the GMAS Leader Accelerator Program 2923, a collaboration between GMAS and The Liminal Space, we were thrilled to kick off our Leadership Workshop series 2024. Our aim? To further elevate the skills and impact of these exceptional leaders. In our first workshop, we delved deep into the crucial concept of psychological safety and its pivotal role in fostering thriving workplace cultures. Together, we explored how each person’s unique leadership DNA contributes to this environment and examined 14 powerful strategies that could be applied to amplify it. We also considered the significance of recent changes to psychosocial hazard legislation, shedding light on its implications for GMAS as a whole and for each participant's leadership style specifically. Through this lens, we identified areas where our leadership might benefit from fine-tuning, ensuring alignment between best practice and legal requirements. Special thanks to GMAS Principal, Brad Evans and Deputy Principal, Meg Watson for your joint investment in the development of your leaders - bravo! As we conclude this enriching weekend, we extend our best wishes to the GMAS team and to educational leaders everywhere as they dive head-first into Term Two tomorrow. Here's to leading with purpose and making a positive impact in the lives of those we serve! #Leadership #LeadershipDevelopment #Education #EducationalLeadership #FeedbackCulture #HardConversations #AgileLeadership
