Affordable housing is an issue for the Lawrence community. Tenants to Homeowners is a local nonprofit that has helped more than 350 families become homeowners since 1992 by building or rehabbing homes and selling them to those who qualify at a greatly reduced cost. For instance, the yellow home second from the left in this photo sold in February for $70k under market value. We're a proud partner of this incredibly important organization, installing solar on many of their new builds to decrease the homeowners' monthly electric bills and reduce the home's impact on the environment. For these recent new builds, we've been installing REC solar panels. These all-black modules are warrantied for 25 years and have one of the lowest degradation rates on the market today. Marvin Walker, who grew up in a crowded household and experienced homelessness, founded Elite Focus Community Outreach, Inc., in August 2022. This Detroit-based organization aims to assist homeless children and young adults in foster care. Elite Focus provides emergency and temporary housing and various supportive services such as tutoring, life skill workshops, and entrepreneurship classes. In addition to its work in assisting homeless individuals, Elite Focus has recently enrolled in DTE Energy's MIGreenPower program. This program allows the organization to create a more #SustainableFuture by attributing a percentage of its electricity use to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. DTE's MIGreenPower program is available to all DTE Electric customers at no extra cost and helps to increase the amount of clean energy on the grid. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more about some of the work we do that you might not immediately think of when you hear “housing and community services.” A lot of what gets shared when it comes to housing is often new developments. But there’s so much more to the story of making housing more affordable and accessible for Oregonians. What’s preservation, and why do we fund it? What do we mean when we talk about “weatherization”? How do energy services fit into affordable housing? Why are we funding modular housing right now? All these questions and more will be answered, so stay tuned! #GetToKnowOHCS

“… ultimately, it is mostly those smaller lenders — credit unions, community banks, or community development loan funds — who will end up being the faces that connect the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to people and communities on the ground.” Read more from Next City on JCF’s work and the GGRF’s focus on low-income and other historically marginalized communities: https://lnkd.in/eg5WkKss

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is transforming #churches across America by making #solarenergy more affordable. The legislation offers tax credits that reduce installation costs, encouraging not only individuals but also community buildings, like churches, to adopt greener systems. Lisa Cleveland, from WATTS WILLOWBROOK CHURCH OF CHRIST of Christ in Compton, California, installed solar panels that now help reduce the church’s electricity bills. These savings are being redirected toward vital community programs, like feeding hundreds of people. Churches, especially in lower-income areas, are benefiting from this shift, allowing them to continue serving their communities despite declining attendance and funding post-COVID. Cleveland is now encouraging other congregations to explore similar opportunities with nonprofits. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report highlighted that while solar installations were initially more common in wealthier areas, new incentives have made clean energy accessible to a wider demographic. As more churches adopt solar, the "solar seeding" effect is driving broader adoption in local communities. #solarpower #cleanenergy #churchcommunity #inflationreductionact #sustainability #communityimpact #solarforall #solarpowered #solarinstallation #solar

SLOW THE GROWTH INFRASTRUCTURE-FIRST POLICY: - Make development pay its way with strong impact fees and hard negotiations for more land donations for schools, parks, and sensitive green spaces. - End the current Commissioner’s practice of not meeting with certain stakeholders and landowners. - Require road and infrastructure improvements before houses are all built out. We can’t keep playing “catch up” on infrastructure. - Work with Metroplan and Orange County staff to prioritize road improvements (“squeaky wheel” gets the grease). - Early and regular engagement with residents to identify issues and concerns, not just at election time. - Negotiate with cellular and wifi companies for better connectivity for safety and quality of life. - Protect rural settlements in Orange County’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
