Sustainability in precinct planning is more than Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and trees. In our projects we will also always try to propose paths along topographical lines to reduce natural stresses, to retain all existing buildings, to insert new buildings into the damaged places, to set a framework for nature to regenerate, to educate visitors about natural systems, sustainable strategies and indigenous culture, to connect canopy across the precinct and beyond, to make walkable precincts at gradients of less than 1:21, to set building zones and envelopes to facilitate the best orientation for buildings for passive design...there’s more of course. To see one example of our work in precinct planning you can look to the Henley Precinct plan, feedback collection has been just been closed, but the documents for public exhibition are still available for viewing at https://lnkd.in/dEvW3xb9. Located on Wallumadegal Country, the Henley Precinct is an 8.6 hectare public space alongside the Parramatta River in Hunter's Hill Council. #urbanism #urbandesign #architecturensw #architecture #precinctplan #masterplan #community #culture

Eco Brutalismo Missing Middle - 5” x 7” Re: Urbanarium Missing Middle Design Competition “Decoding Density” https://lnkd.in/eAaEv9XB Can Artificial Intelligence think in scale when imagining a parti napkin sketch ? Does a.i. have a muse or is it just all wires and silicone down deep ? Does a stepped back 5 story building fit in a 2 story neighborhood ? What part does architectural style play in the decision of contextual fit ? When all Architecture is Progressive over time what is the background City context & how does it age ? What of landscape & architecture as combined ecotone + Nature & the City as sustainable creation in balance ? https://lnkd.in/e5n4Cprr

In this project the use of materials and the orientation of the building maximize natural lighting, reducing the need for artificial light and promoting energy efficiency. The building’s integration into the sloped landscape minimizes environmental disruption, preserving the site’s natural topography and vegetation. #MuzwAaMagazine American landscape architect Kate Orff presents a hybrid model of “stewarded nature” to reduce climate-induced risks faced by cities. “We humans are profoundly impacting the planet. There is no pure nature that’s outside of us,” said Kate Orff in an interview late last year, only a few months after she was included on Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, making the American the first landscape architect ever to receive the recognition. “We’ve made the world what it is already, so now we need to take a very, very strong hand in the remaking. It is a matter of design.” At a time when climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across the globe, Orff’s most ambitious project, the Living Breakwaters initiative off the coast of Staten Island, New York, references the ancient idea of breakwaters. Typically built along coastlines to shield harbors and beaches from waves, these structures are reimagined in a “living” avatar. The initiative comprises eight 700-meter-long breakwaters, partially submerged along the shoreline. Constructed from stone and ecologically enhanced concrete units, these structures mitigate wave impact, minimize sand erosion and create diverse habitat areas for marine life, building reefs that can grow denser over time and offer more protection. The attached photo shows moss/grass/weed thriving between the gaps of pathway tiles—an unassuming yet potent reminder of nature's tenacity. This moss, despite the minimal soil and irregular watering it receives, not only survives but flourishes that too in these mid summers days In our journey to create sustainable living spaces, let this moss/grass inspire us to rely on local species and materials that are adapted to our local environment. Utilizing these resources reduces our carbon footprint, supports local ecosystems, and builds communities that are truly in sync with their natural surroundings. Let's commit to investing in materials that reflect the resilience and beauty of our local environment. By doing so, we not only enhance our architectural projects but also contribute positively to the larger ecosystem. #Sustainability #EcoHabitat #LocalMaterials #Architecture

𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 - 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Biophilia refers to our innate biological connection with nature. As the world continues to urbanise, biophilic design becomes ever more important. Through careful design and implementation, biophilia can reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, improve our well-being, and expedite healing. The character and identity of our nature-based designs derive from climate, ecology and the local vernacular. As a result, beautifully curated and landscaped roof gardens, terraces, and outdoor spaces integrate wilderness into the everyday experience of urban life, increase biodiversity, and create buffers between the busy outside world and the calmness of home.
