🌍 Buildings and Climate Change Adaptation 🌍 Climate change is an undeniable reality that directly impacts our infrastructure. ❗ Did you know? Extreme weather events have significantly increased in frequency over the past 20 years. From 2000 to 2019, there were 7,348 major natural disasters globally, compared to 4,212 in the previous 20 years, marking an 83% increase. This surge in frequency is largely attributed to climate change, which has led to more frequent and severe floods, storms, droughts, wildfires, and heatwaves. Engineering solutions to protect cities from the effect of climate change. This is another example of sea flood barrier. Why do we need solutions and works like these? 📌 Climate change is here and nobody can deny it 📌 When the temperature rises, the ice melts and the sea level rises (you can also try this with a glass of water with floating ice) 📌 Old habit dies hard... so we need time to stop human behaviors that cause climate change 📌 In the meanwhile we need to protect ourselves from the consequences of phenomena that are currently unstoppable Similar system here: https://lnkd.in/dEtCAh37 These are not definitive solutions but they give us more time... and we need time. The World Meteorological Organization has released the 2023 State of the Global Climate. In summary, #2023 broke several climate records and significantly impacted communities across the world. This report is meant to just state the facts, and here are a few on #extremeweather: ➡ Extreme weather continues to lead to severe socio-economic impacts. ➡ Extreme heat affected many parts of the world. Wildfires in Hawaii, Canada and Europe led to loss of life, the destruction of homes and large-scale air pollution. ➡ Flooding associated with extreme rainfall from Mediterranean Cyclone Daniel affected Greece, Bulgaria, Türkiye, and Libya with particularly heavy loss of life in Libya. Full report: https://lnkd.in/gYBXiqMD #Adaptation and #mitigation are as important as ever. The cost of inaction is much higher than the cost of action (lives are being lost). 📚 For actionable adaptation resources for individuals, municipalities, businesses: https://lnkd.in/g3SzkuQG 📚 For mitigation resources Canadian Climate Institute / Institut climatique du Canada 📚 For disaster prevention resources: Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction #climatechange #climateaction #ghgemissions Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation | Centre Intact d’adaptation au climat

🏞️Let's reflect on the profound impacts of climate change on mountain ecosystems. Check out this 2023 Adaptation Gap Report case study to learn more about the losses and damages caused by melting glaciers. #Mountains, known as the "water towers" of Earth, are experiencing unprecedented glacier melt, affecting freshwater resources and causing shifts in river flow patterns and natural hazards. Addressing these challenges is vital for closing the global #adaptation gap. Several new articles have just come out on the topic covered in "Climate Risk at a Tipping Point?" Common themes: (i) the latest data on global land and sea temperatures doesn't fit into any single pattern observed in the past; (ii) we don't fully understand what is going on *right now*, and this hampers the confidence with which we can forecast future weather and climate; (iii) uncertainty about whether we are witnessing an outlier or a fundamental change in weather/climate dynamics. The CRUCIAL article is now updated with the latest data here: https://lnkd.in/e42k3iwR

We recently released a series of data visualizations via ARCTRN Group Inc on a consequence that's often overlooked when we think of climate change— climate migration. Visit https://lnkd.in/euFxX4d5 to view the full project #datavisualization #climatechange #climatemigration
Climate migration involves permanent relocation of individuals, either within their own country or internationally, as a result of environmental disasters driven by climate change. Intense droughts and water scarcity, severe fires and extreme heat, rising sea levels and flooding are among the leading factors of climate migration. Over 3.3 billion people live in areas vulnerable to climate-driven disasters. The effects of climate change will increase rapidly in the future— impacting more people, and at a more severe level. The World Bank estimates that by 2050, 216 million people could be displaced within their own countries due to climate change. 🔗 Find out more about ARCTRN's exploration of this issue: https://lnkd.in/euFxX4d5 Have you or anyone you know experienced displacement due to extreme weather events? If so, how? Let us know in the comments 👇 Pivot Design Group #arctrn #climatemigration #dataviz #datavisualization
