Have you seen it?
I did something a little different yesterday and went to see a film at the cinema, a documentary, to learn something new...
Six Inches of Soil
Was first aired at the The Oxford Farming Conference (OFC) and showcased at the COP 28.
Joined by Wokingham's People, Planet, Pint Host Elizabeth Corse and Anna Watson, plus Joanna, Claire, and Mary at the Reading Biscuit Factory we found the documentary really insightful.
It gave us all a glimpse of what the UK farmers are going through, what the difference between regenerative and organic farming is. 🤯
While none of us are looking to go into farming, it gave us an understanding of what WE can do, and how small changes in our buying behaviour can have major impact on the land we live on.
We also learned that regenerative farming is something that many believe is not sustainable, yet this documentary told a story of 3 different farmers (fruit & veg, cattle, and crop), each one proving that it is possible and the produce meets, if not exceeds the yield of alternative farming techniques.
💡🔔The biggest lesson of all was that our soil needs our help. 💡🔔
We walk on it
We mow it
We plant fruit and vegetables on it
We let animals roam on it
We expect a lot from it and we take it for granted
💡Worms = magic (they are a sign of healthy soil)
Weed killers and Fungus Sprays are really harmful, not just to the weeds but to the soil around them.
💡Opt for natural pesticides where ever possible
Biggest takeaway for me was that healthy soil is less prone to flood (when we have excess rain) because it has better drainage, or become exceptionally dry (when we have dry & hot weather) because it retains water better - how cool is that???
💡Heathy soil - can stop flooding 💡
If that's not an incentive to look after our soil - I don't know what is.
P.S. The first showing was so popular, they are showing it again on 22nd April at the Reading Biscuit Factory. It is being shown at other locations also. Visit ➡️ sixinchesofsoil.org
