Setting the Competitive Compass on the Nordic Life Science Region 🧭✨ Today, Sweden conducted their National Life Science Hybrid Conference: “Tillsammans för en ledande life science-nation” (“Together for a Leading Life Science Nation”), organized by Regeringskansliet and Region Skåne, bringing together approximately 800 participants. A key objective of Sweden’s Life Science Strategy is to position the Nordic region as a globally leading life science hub. Strengthened Nordic collaboration will be crucial for boosting international competitiveness and positioning the region as a unified force within European life science. 💡 Medicon Valley Alliance was honored to contribute to this important discussion. 🔹 “It is time to restart Europe’s innovation engine. We have the compass. We have the political will. Now, what matters is speed and unity—because the world is not waiting for us. The Competitiveness Compass will be the new Commission’s North Star” – Ursula von der Leyen At Medicon Valley Alliance, we are committed to fostering Danish-Swedish and Nordic collaboration in life science. For 28 years, this has been our North Star, and it will continue to guide us. 👏 A big thank you to Region Skåne and Regeringskansliet’s Life Science Office for an insightful conference and valuable discussions—all with the shared vision of making Sweden a leading life science nation!

As a Life science advisor to the Swedish Government, here with the Minister (Secretary) of Education and reasearch, Johan Pehrson, presiding our meeting, I am proud of the new Life Science strategy presented. It is an ambitious take on making Sweden a competetive science, innovation nation within Life Science, not by isolated national efforts but rather by excellence making Sweden an attractive partner for international collaborations. A paradigm shift from previous broad and diluted efforts now aiming towards excellence.

2024 will indeed be an exciting life science year! With a new Danish life science strategy just around the corner and a renewed Swedish life science strategy materializing before the end of the year, Denmark and Sweden as the major life science nations, we are in the EU, will be fueling further growth and attractive frame work conditions for continuous research, development, public-private collaboration and internationalization of the life science sector. As the cross-border Swedish-Danish life science cluster Medicon Valley Alliance is, we are hoping both strategies also will embrace the opportunities that lies in collaborating cross-border between our two countries that have so much in common within the challenges and opportunities in our ambitions about the life science industry and healthcare system. Joint clinical trials, utilizing the synergies in development of the new medicines like the ATPMs, exploring the potential of our amazing health care data, becoming a front runner with Women's Health - all examples of where we would be much stronger and attractive together than on our own. A big thank you for Jeanette Edblad for taking time to discuss the potential and how Medicon Valley Alliance as a Swedish-Danish life science cluster organization can support the future renewed Swedish life science strategy and help strengthen the Swedish (and Danish) ambitions of becoming leading life science nations. A quick reminder if you're a life science CEO or similar, located in the south of Sweden, to ensure you’ve had the chance to respond to this important nationwide survey, which will serve as decision-making input for the life science sector in Sweden. The estimated 10 minutes it will take may prove very beneficial to both your business and the life science sector in Skåne as a whole.   It’s crucial that the Skåne life science sector is well-represented in this survey to provide a fair view of our collective efforts, serving as a platform for the allocation of funds, other resources, and political decision-making. The regional findings will be published following the release of the national results.   The survey is organized by SwedenBIO in cooperation with us, Sahlgrenska Science Park, Stockholm Science City, STUNS Life Science, and Citeline. Anderes Land, andere Landschaft? 🗺 We have a common language between Germany and Austria – but how similar are our respective landscapes around Public Engagement and participation? This is the question we took to the OIS:ZAM Forum of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft in Salzburg last week. As part of a beautifully hosted gathering of more than 40 diverse and impactful participatory projects, we ran a table discussion looking at what the engagement communities in the two countries might be able to learn from each other. An hour may not be enough to find an answer, but here are some of the points that emerged: 💭 In both countries, we have a lot of work to do to fully value and integrate knowledge that comes from lived experience within research, medical or public sector projects. This requires a wide range of competencies among experts beyond their specialism – and suitable professional development offers to foster these. ❕ Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences) in both Germany and Austria frequently have very established research-practice relationships that we can build on to deepen participation and engagement. 🔧 We agreed that engagement is not something that we can do “on top of our actual work”. It needs funding, structures and support, and we learnt a lot about successful models in the Austrian landscape: Young Science Initiative, Sparkling Science, and of course the great work of the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center. Thanks to the OIS Team for a fantastic event and for inviting us to bring our perspective.

We’re proud to be featured in the recent study commissioned by the Nationaal Campussen Overleg and conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs. This research, carried out by Buck Consultants International, highlights the status and impact of 35 campuses across the Netherlands, including the Health & Innovation District (Hid). At Hid, we see firsthand how campuses create opportunities, drive innovation, and contribute to societal and economic growth. Being part of this dynamic national campus landscape motivates us to continue developing and strengthening our role as a hub for biotech and healthcare innovations. Timely topics with lively debate covered; ·      Patient focussed drug development –‘No decision for me without me’ ·      Introducing New Technologies: Optimising pathways to improve population health ·      Artificial intelligence to design new drugs ·      Innovation in R&D: The birth of breakthroughs ·      Data Driven Medicine: The NHS as a strategic partner in Life Sciences ·      Improving global health outcomes through clinical innovation Galien ensure meetings like these drive global debate on health and the importance of raising public awareness, allowing significant time for discussion between panels and audience.  In the UK as we navigate the near 24/7 election coverage, one welcome question sparked some thought provoking answers;  ‘What would the panel put on the manifesto for the [new] government?  . ‘there is much more to do on health inequality – uptake of innovation is low in those populations that are already chronically underserved’ ·      ‘there is an overwhelming need to focus on prevention among all stakeholders in healthcare as the system cannot sustain the more traditional treatment approaches’ ·      ‘Create an Innovation Adoption association – Innovation needs to be better coordinated with matching budgets’ ·      ‘We need to work to predict people’s individual health trajectories by using AI intelligently to help us manage the limited resources available’ This may have been a UK focussed meeting however these responses illustrate the challenges faced more globally.
