Super fun attending #AWE and seeing some new and familiar faces. 📝Key takeaways: 1) 😎#MR is alive and well, and seems comfortable in its skin as a more niche yet growing space. Long are the days of “The Metaverse is everything and everywhere” overhype. The industry feels more mature and that’s good for biz. Hardware is more capable and slimmer than ever across the board. 2) 🤖#AI has not yet penetrated mixed reality in a meaningful way, as far as I could tell from the demos I tried and talks I attended. Huge space to play and excited to explore it in my own projects 3) 🎭#Storytelling continues to be the heart and soul of interactive experiences! The best speakers and experiences all had this in common. Great stories, masterfully told, that gives us a sense of connection and catharsis, continues to be the main reason all this tech and all these tools even exist, I’m all for that!

Excited to publish this essay -- my take on the explosive recent interest in Gen AI (despite its many limitations) coupled with the false "Metaverse is dead" narrative (despite massive, growing user numbers). I believe it's built not on savvy business sense, but on a cultural/generational bias: "Very few people who grew up on immersive interactivity, however, are part of the demographic who largely comprise the investor class. Their flight to AI may seem like a rational apprehension of new technology, but the dream of creating thinking machines predates 'Snow Crash' by decades if not centuries. Not having grown up on interactive immersion as an integral thread in their social fabric, it’s difficult for them to see the appeal of metaverse platforms like Roblox and Fortnite, and easy to dismiss it all as 'just online games' -- even when the evidence of their continued growing mass adoption is right in front of them. "I’m convinced this cultural/generational blind spot is causing Silicon Valley’s leadership to miss the next great creative / technological shift of the social Internet -- even when it’s often happening right down the hall in their own kids’ bedroom..."
