Always an #Aha moment as I pause and reflect on the sheer magnitude of what Unitaid does.
I'm am proud to be part of a fantastic #board, which balances representation of board members from #lmic & #highincome countries.
Unitaid is truly a pathfinder, influencer and an #equitable#access champion🏆. Working with other global health institutions, this slim organisation manages to also undertake market shaping, implementation studies, community engagement and #demand#creation at a country-level.
We are looking at a future where #health and #climateadaptation & #resilience meet Regional production of #innovative and #green production of these therapeutics, including #monoclonal#antibodies for all #lmics. At current point, Africa only hold 1% of that maeket. Even with bourgeoning non-communicable diseases and localised #pandemics, the horizon is bright.🌞
Support this work in any way you can and we can look forward to this future where #syndemics are prepared for and efficiently addressed. But given that biological warfare knows no boarders, we also call on #African leaders start #financially contributing to #Agenda2063 through the African Medicines Agency (AMA). The time for #ODA is dead. An opportunity to innovate?

'In conclusion, interventions targeting key motivating factors that influence the adoption of positive behaviours for malaria prevention and control if well conducted, can contribute to significant improvements in malaria-related outcomes, ultimately reducing the burden of the disease on affected populations. In addition, overcoming barriers to malaria prevention and control should be participatory and involve community members at the center of all interventions.'

Just as data is key to #malaria control and elimination efforts, educating at-risk populations about malaria prevention also positively contributes to these efforts. A recent study conducted in Uganda set out to gauge the impact of mass media campaigns on the knowledge of malaria prevention measures among pregnant mothers.
The study found that pregnant women exposed to malaria prevention messaging had more awareness and knowledge about the proper use of insecticide-treated bed nets than those who had no exposure to this messaging. This finding underscores the critical role of delivering information about malaria prevention to intended audiences, and the need to employ diverse prevention strategies to save more lives: bit.ly/3MLHrh3
Malaria remains a significant public health threat, impacting millions of people worldwide. Children under five are particularly vulnerable, with malaria being a leading cause of childhood illness and death in Africa.
The good news is that malaria is preventable and treatable. Effective tools like insecticide-treated bed nets, rapid diagnostic tests, and lifesaving antimalarial medications exist.
At WAVA, we are committed to:
-Educating communities about malaria prevention and treatment.
-Advocating for increased availability of essential tools like bed nets, vaccine and medication.
-Working alongside healthcare institutions and other organizations to combat malaria.
So today, on World Malaria Day, WAVA joins the global fight to eradicate this preventable disease.
Let's work together to achieve a world free from malaria!

The Ohio State University Global One Health initiative, with the support of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (#CDC) IHR/CARES project, supplied the Amhara Public Health Institute with necessary malaria microscopy consumables, including microscopic slides, blood collection lancets and Giemsa Stain reagents. These supplies will help strengthen the malaria testing capacity in health facilities in the region. Overall, the IHR/CARES project aims to increase malaria diagnostic capacity to ensure reliable and timely diagnosis and treatment of patients. Desalegne Mengesha Degefaw, Country Director of Ohio State Global One Health handed over the supplies to Mr Belay Bezabih, Director General of Amhara Public Health Institute.

On World Malaria Day, we recognize the significant public health challenge posed by malaria, particularly for children under the age of five. During our CCI community health needs assessments in Africa, we have observed malaria infection rates amongst this demographic reaching between 50% and 80% at the time of study.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that within the WHO African Region, 80% of malaria deaths tragically occur in children under five.
Our organization is firmly committed to ensuring equitable access to preventative, diagnostic, and treatment services for malaria. We believe everyone deserves the right to timely, affordable, and high-quality healthcare to combat this preventable disease.
Preventive measures are crucial in the fight against malaria. These include:
- Sleeping under mosquito nets in malaria-endemic areas.
- Utilizing mosquito repellents containing DEET, IR-3535, or Icaridin.
- Employing mosquito coils or diffusers as deterrents.
- Wearing long sleeves and trousers during peak mosquito activity (evenings).
We have a number of malaria awareness initiatives taking place across our sites, stay tuned to find out more.

Today marks Malaria Day, a time to raise awareness about this deadly disease that continues to impact millions worldwide. As we reflect on the progress made in the fight against malaria, let's also acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead.
Malaria remains a significant threat to global health, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare and preventive measures. Yet, through concerted efforts in research, prevention, and treatment, we have made strides in reducing its prevalence and saving lives.
This Malaria Day, let's renew our commitment to combating this disease. Whether it's supporting initiatives for mosquito control, promoting the use of insecticide-treated bed nets, or advocating for access to effective treatment, each of us can play a part in the fight against malaria.
Let's spread awareness, educate others, and work together to create a world where no one has to suffer from malaria. Together, we can make a difference.
