Decision stress? As parents, and really just as adults, we've all been there. A June study done by Accenture found that 73% of consumers are overwhelmed by too many product options and 74% have walked away from a purchase in the last three months. Forerunner Ventures cited this study in their latest edition of The CQ (if you work in consumer and you don't subscribe, run don't walk), to argue that the past decade of innovation has been focused on access to information, however "access now feels counterproductive. More is no longer more, signaling that the prevailing value proposition of the tech industry is post peak." Instead of ALL the information, consumers want the relevant information in order to make informed, efficient decisions on their purchases...without the accompanying stress. At School's Out we hear that message loud and clear and are exploring what it looks like to leverage AI so that parents can make decisions about camp and activities for their kids even less stressful. Chatting with my friend Abby Anderson last night, she coined a really insightful phrase around the digital equity divide: "tech empathy." Empathy for folks navigating big feelings around intimidating technologies like AI. Empathy for people at different skill levels who might approach things differently based on generation or access to tech. Empathy for the learning curve we're all navigating in an increasingly connected world. Tech empathy. What a succinct and elegant concept!

When Technology Disconnects Us: A Cautionary Reflection on the Rising Role of AI in Our Lives Over the past week, the tragic news of a 14-year-old boy in the U.S. taking his life after intense interactions with a chatbot has shaken people worldwide. In the aftermath, many voices quickly pointed fingers at AI and technology, but is the fault truly with technology alone? To me, the root issue goes far deeper, reflecting the troubling path society seems to be headed. Technology should enhance our lives, support us, and provide tools to make things better—not replace genuine human interaction. Yet, somehow, we’ve arrived at an era where tech is replacing the fundamental social connections that define our humanity. The dystopian visions in shows like Black Mirror are no longer fictional warnings; they’re playing out in real time. Look around in public spaces: people glued to screens, families sitting together in silence as each person is absorbed in their own digital world. Children are increasingly diagnosed with social anxiety, ADHD, and other developmental issues because they’re growing up with fewer face-to-face interactions. We often see even the youngest toddlers entertained by tablets instead of parents or caregivers, who are caught up in their own virtual lives. Where does this lead us? I believe it's time to pause and question: are we building a world where technology serves our needs, or one where it increasingly isolates us? The future doesn’t have to be one of disconnection—but only if we consciously choose a different path. Let’s prioritize real conversations, real relationships, and foster an environment where technology complements, rather than replaces, the human connections that truly enrich our lives.

****Parenting, Questions, and the Great Partnership of Google and AI**** This weekend, my younger one threw me a curveball of a question: "How can there be a chain of parents of parents of parents… with no end? Where did it all start?" Caught off guard, I launched into the story of Adam and Eve, hoping it might satisfy his curiosity. Oh, how wrong I was. What followed was an evening of spirited Googling, with my two little detectives unearthing theories, debating each other, and eventually wondering aloud if AI could explain this endless chain of beginnings better than I could. That’s when I had a revelation: parenting today is equal parts sharing knowledge, navigating technology, and trying not to fall behind. The stream of questions—from “Why do we dream?” to “Can AI think like us?”—makes me wonder if all those childhood hours I spent flipping through encyclopedias were secretly preparing me for this. Back then, I was the “encyclopedia kid,” the one with an answer for everything. Some found it impressive, others… less so (we all know the type 😉). But now? I’m a “Google-assisted, AI-backed mom,” fielding questions that sometimes feel worthy of a graduate seminar. AI has added a fascinating twist to this journey. My boys have already figured out they can consult ChatGPT when I hesitate on a question (traitors!), making me their “backup source.” I adore their curiosity, but I can’t help but wonder—am I raising kids, or training a duo of tech-savvy researchers? Parenting in the age of AI is a wild ride—funny, humbling, and endlessly surprising.
