Guys, am I over-reading? So, at last week’s AFR Super & Wealth Summit, APRA publicly detailed their intent to scrutinise fund expenditure – particularly non-investment costs i.e. advertising, sponsorships, events, advice – to ensure spending is aimed directly at maximising member outcomes. At face value, uncontroversial? Another familiar case of an agency cracking down the players it regulates – and all for the benefit of consumers; right? I see it differently. I’m a scientist obsessed with Trust – the forms it takes, the proofs necessary for each form of trust, and so on. I see 2x big-enough-to-think-about unintended consequences of this publicised scrutiny. 1. Scrutiny paradox: our term for when the consumer is worse off for seeing their service provider being “named & shamed” WITH NO material improvement delivered to customer. Why? Because mistrust is a burden. Who wants to worry about whether their fund is optimally spending their money? Trust is a confident relationship with the unknown. Mistrust is worry, it’s cognitively and affectively depleting. It’s big enough to talk about. If you’re going to fertilise mistrust, be prepared to deliver a material customer benefit - "hollow scrutiny" like this does more harm than good. Over-read? 2. Risk aversion corrodes group decision making: typically, when diffuse responsibility, group decision making comes under scrutiny, that group will overweight the risk in their decision making – the key here is “over-weighting” i.e. leading to poorer quality decisions – and missed growth and scale opportunities. Again, the member loses. Over-read? We’re in a trust economy – trust is a perception – it’s delicate – get in touch to get-read on how it works and how to nurture it.

The central question at this year's Consalia Global Sales Transformation event was both timely and thought-provoking: Can AI replace the human connection in sales? And if so, how do we differentiate our communication when 75% of sellers are leveraging generative AI to prompt engagements? While there isn’t a simple answer, one thing is certain: successful salespeople continue to lead with human connection as their superpower. Their primary role remains that of orchestrators, guiding campaigns from the first encounter to closure with a blend of empathy, strategy, insights and specific carefully choosen words... I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to the panel discussion on cracking growth in this new era of AI-powered communication and account management. It was an honor to share the stage with inspiring individuals like David Beare, Professor Elizabeth Stokoe from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Luke Skinner, David Mines, and Dr. Ryan O'Sullivan. A huge thank you to Dr. Philip Squire and Eddie Guevarra for hosting this fantastic event at the London Stock Exchange for the 17th year. Here's to driving transformation and redefining what it means to lead in sales in a rapidly evolving world! #SalesTransformation #AIinSales #HumanConnection #SalesLeadership #GenerativeAI #SalesGrowth #AccountManagement #SalesInnovation #Consalia #LSE #LondonStockExchange Philip Squire Elizabeth Stokoe Eddie Guevarra Michael Pearson
I'm often asked whether human communication is an art or a science. One way to describe what conversation analysts like me do in our research is that we identify and describe systematically (aka 'the science') what constitutes effective practice (aka 'the art'). It was such a pleasure to present at today's #GSTXIX (sharing the stage with David Beare Luke Skinner Birgitte Pingel David Mines Dr. Ryan O'Sullivan) which had as its theme 'The Art and Science of Sales Language.' I talked about my research on #sales, #mediation, and #crisis #negotiation, including the surprising interactional practices they share. I also gave examples of how, through collaborating with salespeople, mediators, negotiators - and academics Rein Ove Sikveland & Bogdana Huma - the research insights have impacted and benefitted some of the organizations I've worked with over the years. And it was a treat to visit, for the first time, 'the other LSE' - since Consalia's Global Sales Transformation was hosted, for the 17th year, at the London Stock Exchange :-) Many thanks for inviting me, Philip Squire Eddie Guevarra! Customer Trust = hurdle requirement for brand engagement. Behavioural science evidence tells us loads about trust — including how a brands trust can be built or eroded. Whether it's related to a customer believing they can trust a brands: - pricing strategies - intentions with customers' data - sales representatives - etc... ...trust underpins customers' willingness to engage (or disengage) with brands and their representatives. Want to know more about trust (or anything behavioural)? HMU.

Our article on doing culturally sensitive research has finally been published! ➡ Based on my research experience in #Brazil, this article explores how emic concepts impact the research process and its outcomes. 🔎 It is both a personal and fieldwork reflection and it aims to advance qualitative methodologies in international and especially cross-cultural management research by considering the contextual (cultural) particularities in which research takes place. 💡 Greatest insights (from the inside): We show how seven emic concepts impacted not only the research process, but especially the outcomes and theory building. 🔔 Moreover, we suggest eight recommendations for conducting international fieldwork. 🙏 Thanks to Christoph Barmeyer and David S. A. Guttormsen for the fruitful collaboration. #internationalmanagement #qualitativeresearch #emic #Brazil #Germany
