What does it take to be Australia's best business school for research? 📖 We took top spot for both research and reputation in The Australian Financial Review's Best Business Schools 2024 rankings this week - and those two categories aren't a coincidence, says Dean Jenny George. "Research is enormously important for your global reputation. What makes a business school stand out among its peers is the quality of the thinking of the people you have on staff; people who are genuinely advancing the field, who are doing research that is current, relevant and that fundamentally adds to the base knowledge of the field." Julie Hare spoke with Associate Dean of Research Jennifer Overbeck and several of our academics to learn more about their work, from Assistant Professor Jamie Cross using statistical models to help explain the effects of monetary policy on income distribution to Associate Professor Deshani Ganegoda's studies that challenge established wisdom about the human side of organisational behaviour. I'm proud to work with world-class scholars who have landed us at the top of the AFR best b-schools research list for 2024. This article quotes me, along with my colleagues Jamie Cross and Deshani Ganegoda, talking in depth about their great work, Jamie building econometric models that explain global oil prices; and Deshani on her examinations of how to improve workplaces by helping overqualified workers connect with and support others, and how to rein in abusive supervision by ensuring that managers above that supervisor avoid blind spots about that bad behaviour. These are just two of the examples of MBS colleagues who do rigorous science that offers immediate value to our students, and the broader community. https://lnkd.in/gP6ZCNM3

Governance: The Unsung Enabler of Innovation in Higher Education When we talk about innovation in higher education, the focus often lands on technology, cutting-edge research, or new teaching methods. But what about governance? Governance plays a critical role in creating the frameworks that allow universities to innovate responsibly. By fostering clear decision-making structures, ensuring accountability, and aligning strategic goals, effective governance enables institutions to adapt to challenges such as financial pressures, digital transformation, and evolving student expectations. Innovation cannot thrive in a vacuum—it requires a foundation of stability, clarity, and sustainability. Strong governance ensures that innovation is not just a buzzword but a practical, achievable goal that aligns with an institution’s mission and long-term success. As a Governance Manager, I’ve seen first-hand how the right processes and structures can drive impactful change. It’s not about adding more layers of bureaucracy but about creating frameworks that empower decision-makers, streamline operations, and prioritise resources where they matter most. 📩 If your institution is exploring how governance can support sustainable innovation, let’s connect and start the conversation. #HigherEducation #Governance #Innovation #Sustainability #UKHE #Leadership
