Some of you might know that I first went to India ten years ago as General Manager of Roche Pharma India. I was lucky enough to return recently alongside Padraic Ward and the Roche Pharma International leadership team. This trip marked my first trip back and wow, the progress India has made in a decade is incredible. So many facets of society- from infrastructure to service to digitisation- have supported India to become even more vibrant and to take important steps to become more equal. I know that this kind of progress is possible for Africa. During our trip, we had the opportunity to meet with advanced healthcare thinkers who are solving complex problems for Indian patients. Aravind Srinivasan and Devi Shetty both amazed and inspired me. They have made an incredible impact by creating healthcare delivery systems that meet the Indian healthcare system where it is. Dr Aravind is offering cataracts services to all Indians, irrespective of their means. While the cost and service level varies, the outcome and quality of care never does. ARAVIND EYE CARE SYSTEM Hospitals prioritises equity by providing free or heavily subsidised treatment to the 50% of the patient pool who cannot afford to pay while maintaining financial self-sustainability. No patient is left behind. In 2023, the clinic held over 5.7 million outpatient visits and over 700,000 surgeries. Dr Aravind and his team also improved all parts of the patient journey to ensure that patients got the best possible outcome. This included improving the efficiency of the caregiving process, optimising patient treatment adherence, and reducing the need for multiple patient visits by creating a ‘one-stop-shop.’ Dr Prasad Sheety is an Indian entrepreneur and cardiac surgeon who is the chairman and founder of Narayana Health. Dr Sheety is inviting the global south to shift its thinking from #UHC to universal affordable #health #insurance, a system by which each household will have health insurance that goes beyond the nuclear family. This would include covering household staff such as housekeepers and drivers. He noted that governments with smaller tax-to-GDP ratios will struggle to spend significantly higher amounts on healthcare but governments can make insurance affordable so that those who are neither very poor nor very rich can access it. Both these innovative healthcare professionals are solving challenges similar to those we have in Africa. We need to learn from the example of our #LMIC brothers and sisters and apply what makes sense to our markets. I am already thinking about pressing problems that India can lend solutions for.
As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, India's progress is truly remarkable. From transformational digital technology to pioneering infrastructural reform; the pace and scale of advancement can be felt in every sector of society, and healthcare is no exception. I found a visit to the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmology at AIIMS in New Delhi particularly inspiring. Here, healthcare professionals are leading the way in making innovative treatments available to patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. I also had the opportunity to meet pioneers of innovation in the Indian healthcare space. Their unique insights, drive to solve far-reaching challenges with out-of-the-box thinking, and commitment to ensure access to quality, equitable care for patients across society was incredible to witness. And I saw the same level of dedication and passion in my Roche India colleagues who are fully embracing the potential of cutting-edge #digitaltechnology and #data to benefit customers and patients alike. These are valuable lessons we strive to replicate in other parts of the world. Digital technology is creating a healthier and even more vibrant future for India. Exciting times lie ahead; kudos to the #RocheIndia team for their unwavering commitment to making a difference!

📢 Enhancing Diagnostics in India: Moving from Disparity to Parity 📢 We’re thrilled to share insights from Aryaman Tandon, Managing Partner & Co-Founder at Praxis Global Alliance, who spoke at the ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India)'s #Diagnostics Summit in New Delhi, where Praxis Global Alliance was a proud knowledge partner. During the summit, Aryaman not just had a Fireside with Honb. Brig. Dr Arvind Lal but also emphasized India's urgent need for smart diagnostics and highlighted the transformative role of technology in advancing quality, accessibility, and affordability in diagnostics across Tier 2 and 3+ cities. 💡 "India has approximately 150,000 pathology labs, yet the market remains highly fragmented. Indians undergo just two tests per year on average, a number that pales in comparison to other countries. To make diagnostics more accessible and proactive, we need technology integration—from booking orders and sample movement to remote diagnostics and AI-driven analytics," Aryaman Tandon shared. Praxis Global Alliance also launched a pivotal paper at the event, titled "Advancing Quality, Affordability, and Accessibility in Tier 2 and 3+ India through Technology" The white paper underscores the potential for technology to create new services that are not only affordable but also close the gap between urban and rural healthcare. Thank you to ASSOCHAM for organizing this summit and providing a platform to discuss the future of diagnostics in India. Together, we can propel diagnostics from "disparity to parity."
