ICIN is supportive of new budget commitments from the federal government that protect Indigenous rights in carbon and support the development of the Australian carbon industry. As the national peak body supporting First Nations engagement in the carbon industry, ICIN welcomes the May 2024 budget announcement of $12.2 million for First Nations peoples to participate in upfront consent processes for Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) projects. “ICIN’s research reveals Indigenous Peoples hold rights to undertake carbon projects across 58% of Australia’s landmass. Indigenous People must be respected as equal partners who bring value and capacity to carbon projects rather than just being consulted as a regulatory requirement. In our experience, the greater the level of engagement and ownership in a project by Indigenous People – the greater the outcomes for all,” said Interim ICIN CEO Shaun Ansell Read ICIN's full budget response: https://lnkd.in/gQiSJRtB #climateaction #climatechange #netzero #netnegative #indigenousknowledge #firemanagement #indigenouspeople #climatejustice

📢 NEWS ALERT In a powerful call to action, 130 international and Congolese organizations have united in support of "Our Land Without Oil," a nationwide campaign urging the DRC government to end oil development. This comes as the DRC Hydrocarbons Minister recently cancelled the auction of 27 oil blocks but hinted at a restricted tender—a move raising fresh transparency concerns. Led by Congolese civil society at COP16 in Cali, this coalition highlights the social and environmental dangers of renewed drilling, especially in protected areas and Indigenous lands. Our partners APEM, CORAP, DGPA, CAGDFT and others within the newly formed civil society network Engagement for the Environment and Human Rights (Reseau-EDH) call for alternative energy solutions and community-centered conservation, urging global leaders to support sustainable paths for DRC. 📕💥Over 40 civil society organisations call on EU leaders to secure funding for the Just Transition in the next EU budget. Currently, 92 regions across Europe are using the ▶️Just Transition Fund◀️ to mitigate the impacts of the closure of high-carbon industries in regions throughout the EU. 💡The timing of this statement is particularly significant given the upcoming mid-term review of the EU’s cohesion policy, the review of the Just Transition Fund, and the European Commission’s proposal for the new Multiannual Financial Framework, which will be followed by negotiations with other EU institutions. 💡With this statement, Europe’s leading civil society organisations underline the importance of keeping the Just Transition Fund as a dedicated financial instrument under the cohesion policy. In addition, they call on EU leaders to call for more robust environmental conditionalities to ensure that funded projects make a greater contribution to the EU’s climate and biodiversity targets. #justtransition #JustTransitionFond #EUbudget

Sweden and Zambia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on climate cooperation under the Paris Agreement! In parallel with negotiating a binding bilateral agreement regulating transactions of internationally transferable mitigation outcomes, there are also discussions about what kind of mitigation activities the Swedish Energy Agency can support in Zambia. Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency, says: "Together with our partner organisations, we aim to develop projects that provide large emissions reductions and at the same time affect the energy system in the country positively in the long term. It is also important that our efforts benefit the local communities and contribute to sustainable development." Johan Hallenborg, Ambassador of Sweden to Zambia, and Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment of Zambia, attended the signing ceremony in Lusaka. The Climate Investment Funds, Asian Development Bank (ADB), The World Bank, and the Government of the #Maldives are partnering to collect and unpack results achieved under the Scaling-up Renewable Energy for Low Income Countries Program. With Maldives’ investments now at a completion stage, we have a chance to fully assess how the CIF’s programmatic approach worked. We are here to listen to citizens, private sector, practitioners, and government to review the results and gather lessons for the CIF, as well as to share with our development partners. The Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden and Zambia under the Paris Agreement is a prime example of the growing collaboration between European and African nations in addressing climate change. This partnership, like Germany's renewable energy initiative with Morocco and France's solar power support in Senegal, demonstrates how these alliances can significantly reduce emissions while enhancing local energy systems and benefiting communities. In response, it's crucial for more West African countries to actively pursue similar collaborations. These partnerships not only help meet global climate goals but also drive local economic growth and build resilience. By seizing these opportunities, our region can accelerate its journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future. 😎 🌴 #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #ParisAgreement #AfricaEuropePartnership #RenewableEnergy

The Swedish Energy Agency and Rwanda's Ministry of the Environment have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. – This is a first step towards establishing projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the energy transition in Rwanda. There are also great opportunities to simultaneously improve the conditions for local populations and contribute to sustainable development in the country, says Sandra Lindström, head of the unit for international climate cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency. The next step is to negotiate a legally binding bilateral framework agreement on emissions trading between the two countries. – Rwanda has shown that it is possible to combine economic growth with ambitious climate goals. Through its initiatives in sustainable energy and green development, Rwanda can become a source of inspiration for other countries, says Martina Fors Mohlin, chargé d'affaires at the Swedish embassy in Kigali. This is a slight departure from my usual articles, but one that nevertheless deals with the exploitation of the natural environment and local communities. This is an article based on my report for the EMS Foundation on the racket that is the Voluntary Carbon Markets in Africa and South Africa. https://lnkd.in/dYhNX-Rq

Really NICE NEWS for the day. Our High Court has declared the government's plan to add 1,500 MW of new coal-fired power unlawful and unconstitutional! I love our constitution and courts. This decision followed a legal challenge led by youth climate activists and supported by impacted communities. Well done change champions! The court found that the government, particularly Minister Gwede Mantashe and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, failed to consider the constitutional rights of children and the environmental and health impacts of new coal power! (How they keep their jobs and don’t get prosecuted, is a miracle!) This ruling emphasizes protection of our constitutional rights, particularly those of youth, against shenanigans with fossil fuels and fossil ways of thinking! #CancelCoal #ClimateJustice #YouthActivism #SouthAfrica #CoalPower #EnvironmentalRights #ClimateChange #LegalVictory #SustainableEnergy #HealthAndEnvironment #CleanEnergy #ConstitutionalRights #AfricanClimateAlliance #VukaniMovement #GroundWork #AirQuality #CoalIndustry #FutureGenerations #EnvironmentalActivism #HighCourtRuling
