Gender-based violence (GBV) is rooted in structural gender inequalities, patriarchy, and power imbalances. GBV is defined as, "any harmful threat or act directed at an individual or group based on actual or perceived sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sex characteristics, sexual orientation, and/or lack of adherence to varying socially constructed norms around masculinity and femininity". Unfortunately, for complex reasons that require deep and extensive analysis, women are consciously considered by many men as "second sex" and "sex goods" even in developed or democratic societies. which is an inhibiting mentality in order to lay the groundwork for gender equality. It is very difficult to succeed in the patriarchal system that has dominated human society throughout history. Today I completed the GBA Plus course from Women and Gender Equality Canada. Course outline Chapter 1: Sex and gender – A place to begin Chapter 2: Moving beyond sex and gender Chapter 3: What is Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus)? Chapter 4: What does GBA Plus look like "in action"? Chapter 5: Putting GBA Plus into practice Each chapter took about 30 minutes and a test at the end. This course was truly eye-opening, providing scenarios and examples that challenged my perspective. I learned that GBA Plus is a lot more than just sex and gender. A comprehensive tool to approach diversity, equity, and inclusion in different sectors. This course certainly broadened my knowledge and understanding of this topic.
