There is no dearth of information for students today. With the help of AI, even time is not a factor any more. BUT, mastering the skill of a focused literature survey is what ultimately drives a project to success. In my 15 years as a research scientist, this was always the trickiest yet most crucial tasks. An efficient literature survey requires both analytical and critical thinking. So, at STEMonsters Education programs, we designed a framework that enables the high school students and undergraduates to identify the right resources instead of getting overwhelmed with excess data or getting lost in irrelevant details. Biostatistics is a field that requires a precise form of creativity. Enabling students to embark on their own creative journey is the goal of Joshua Warren’s teaching. Warren, an associate professor of biostatistics, teaches Bayesian Statistics (BIS567) to a diverse group of students, including those from our MPH, MS, and PhD programs, as well as individuals from Yale’s computer science and statistics departments. Tomorrow is Utrecht University's education event in the Academy building. At 9.30 I am in a panel discussion on GenAI in Education making three points: 1. GenAI reveals weaknesses in current curricula, where attention has shifted focus from PROCESS to PRODUCTS 2. It's not just GenAI! We need 'tool criticism' in our curricula so that students are able to critically reflect on the ethics and impact of digital tools (e.g Google Scholar) on knowledge production. 3. There are many reasons (privacy, climate, misinformation etc) against GenAI in Edu. It's implementation requires discussion and oversight. As a Full Professor of Statistics and Mathematics, I stress the vital role of Bayesian Statistics in education. It shouldn't be optional but a requirement for majors in various fields like behavioral, social, clinical, medical, and communication studies.
