Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 3 storm, slammed into Florida's west coast near Siesta Key around 8:30 PM ET with 120 mph winds. This major hurricane, which had intensified into a Category 5 earlier this week, brings a renewed threat to an area still recovering from Hurricane Helene. Milton is unleashing heavy rain, high winds, and tornadoes across the Tampa Bay area and southwest Florida. The storm surge, predicted to reach up to 15 feet in some areas, poses a catastrophic risk to coastal communities. After crossing Florida, Hurricane Milton will re-emerge in the Atlantic early Thursday, bringing a dangerous storm surge of 3-5 feet to coastal Georgia from Savannah down to the Florida border. Areas north of Savannah, including Charleston, can expect a slightly lower surge of up to 3 feet. #Hurricane #Milton #EventResponse #Insurance #Insurtech #ExtremeWeather #Opterrix

Hurricane Helene has made landfall in north-western Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, leading forecasters to issue warnings of a potentially catastrophic storm surge. More than one million homes and businesses are without power, and states of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, accompanied by flash flood warnings. The hurricane surge—a wall of seawater driven ashore by winds—could reach heights of up to 20 feet (6.1 metres) in some areas. Forecasters have cautioned that the storm surge may have a catastrophic impact on Apalachee Bay. Our catastrophe response team is actively monitoring the situation via our (RE)ACT platform. Key freight markets in Florida are expected to experience significant disruptions as Hurricane Milton is forecasted to hit the state's Gulf coast Wednesday night. Large cities within the storm's path are Tampa and Orlando, both in the top 25 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. As is the case before a hurricane, truckload demand has spiked as a probable function of shippers' trying to make a last-second push to get freight out of the region. However, also typical in this scenario, capacity has reportedly tightened as many carriers have turned away loads in the days leading up to the storm. Just like Hurricane Helene's impacts to Florida's Big Bend region as well as to western North Carolina, Milton threatens a similar fate to central and southern Florida's truckload market as residual damage to infrastructure and immediate demand to move emergency aid are increasingly likely in the storm's aftermath. Commerce Express Inc. will monitor the situation closely and provide relevant updates to customers as it relates to their freight needs. . . . #hurricane #milton #severeweather #trucking #truckload #FTL #LTL #logistics #logisticscompany #CommerceExpressInc

Hurricane Milton is set to hit Florida hard—again. 🌪️ After Hurricane Helene’s devastation, Florida is racing to prepare for a second natural disaster in just two weeks. Governor Ron DeSantis has called for one of the largest evacuations in years, as Hurricane Milton is expected to land as a Category 3 storm. The state is bracing for 12-foot storm surges, with the National Guard deploying 8,000 troops for relief efforts. Beyond the immediate threat, these back-to-back hurricanes are exacerbating issues in Florida’s housing market. Tampa’s housing supply has surged 58%, while demand has dropped by 10%. Sellers are slashing prices as prospective buyers are deterred by skyrocketing home and flood insurance premiums—up 400% over the last five years. The hurricane season is likely to further impact these rates, with Milton alone projected to cause $35 billion in damages. As Florida braces for another round of severe weather, both the human toll and economic effects continue to mount. Businesses and communities need to plan for and build resilience in the face of more frequent and severe extreme weather events. With interstate closures, out-of-service rail lines and nearly 600 roads closed or impassable in the wake of Hurricane Helene, moving goods into and out of affected regions remains challenging. While the initial shock was severe — with the volume of shipments declining as much as 34% in Florida and Georgia on a week-over-week basis — we're starting to see recovery. FourKites data shows that shipments destined for Florida, Georgia and South Carolina plummeted more than 25% on a week-over-week basis in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene. By Tuesday, September 29, shipment volumes had largely recovered for the majority of states in the storm's path — with Florida seeing a 20% week-over-week increase. FourKites will continue to track the impact of tropical storms and hurricanes on global supply chain operations — make sure to follow and stay tuned for further updates. #data #HurricaneHelene #Florida #supplychain
