During the last two days, climate researchers from Greenlandic, Danish and Faroese institutions and research stakeholders from Nuuk came together to exchange the latest knowledge on climate research, marine environment, and the UN Decade of Ocean Science and Sustainable Development 2021-2030 in Nuuk. Our session highlighted the ways in which national strategies can lead the way for research and community collaboration. Daniel Lyberth Hauptmann presented our work at Arctic Hub and Naalakkersuisut - Grønlands Selvstyre's Research Strategy from 2022. As Greenland embarks on its journey toward a National Climate Strategy, we’re grateful to Avijâja Rosing-Olsen, Special Advisor at Naalakkersuisut for introducing Naalakkersuisut's work. One of the first steps in this strategy is a series of upcoming workshops across the country, starting in Tasiilaq, where stakeholders from different fields will unite to drive change. The conference was hosted by the National Centre for Climate Research, Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut, in collaboration with the Arctic Hub. #GreenlandClimateStrategy #OceanScience #Greenland

Besides climate-change-induced sea-level rise, land subsidence can strongly amplify coastal risk in flood-prone areas. Check out our recently published study, where we assess for the first time, current coastal land subsidence at the scale of Europe - using the new Copernicus European Ground Motion Service (EGMS). Our results suggest that nearly half of the low-lying coastal areas in Europe are currently subsiding at a rate faster than 1 mm/yr on average! We found that coastal subsidence is higher on average in areas hosting more people, urban centers, and critical infrastructure. The cognitive dissonance in dealing with mass coral bleaching The Great Barrier Reef is facing an existential threat of our own making. We know what the solution is but our current governance around the Reef is inadequate to meet the challenge. We can’t speak truth to power; science does not guide our decision making; and we can’t acknowledge that current economic priorities (and vested interests) mean that “the best managed reef ecosystems in the world” is being hung out to bleach. https://lnkd.in/ggFvXKvZ

🌍 Integrating Indigenous Knowledge into Policy and Research for a Resilient Arctic ❄️ We are excited to announce the launch of a major northern Indigenous Knowledge hub and event databases, a critical tool for advancing informed decision-making in Arctic policy and research. These event databases capture the profound, place-based insights of Arctic Indigenous communities, offering a unique and essential perspective on climate change and environmental stewardship. What sets this initiative apart is its commitment to co-creation—ensuring that Indigenous voices are actively involved in shaping the data and solutions in Arctic research projects. By merging Indigenous Knowledge with scientific data through genuine collaboration, we achieve a more holistic understanding of ecological shifts, strengthening climate adaptation and environmental monitoring strategies. For policymakers and researchers, this co-creative approach is crucial for ensuring that decisions are informed by the lived experiences and expertise of those who know the Arctic best. Let’s build scientifically robust, culturally grounded, and co-created solutions for long-lasting impact. Register now for our Science to Policy Summit on May 15! Our topic is "Conservation as climate mitigation: Using carbon programs to protect and restore ecosystems." The Summit will take place at Lacamas Lake Lodge, and virtual attendance is also available. Carbon programs create financial incentives to reduce emissions and have the potential to be integrated into a variety of conservation and restoration programs. At the Science to Policy Summit 2024, carbon program business leaders, resource managers, researchers, and restoration practitioners will share the latest research on carbon sequestration, how carbon programs are currently operating, and how they are evolving to meet new restoration and conservation initiatives. Register: https://lnkd.in/gDpEN8z6 The Estuary Partnership initiated the Science to Policy Summit series in 2007 to expand the dialog among scientists, natural resource professionals and community leaders within the region. This will be the first recurrence of the Summit since 2019.

#MercatorOcean took the floor at the "High Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change"! ⬇️ Our Director General, Pierre Bahurel, joined a panel discussion on "Satellite Technology for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Ocean." 🛰️ The panel highlighted the critical role of satellite and in situ observations in monitoring the Ocean. By integrating these observations with models, we can create a comprehensive digital representation of the Ocean, paving the way for the development of the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean 🌐🌊 This innovative approach is essential for policymakers and decision-makers, providing them with the tools needed to make informed decisions about conservation, mitigation, and adaptation strategies. As we look ahead to the Third UN Ocean Conference in June 2025, events like this foster the exchange of best practices and successful experiences related to Ocean governance and health, driving forward national, regional, and global solutions. #SustainableOcean #UNOceanConference #UNOC25 #BlueEconomy

One month to go!! SAVE THE DATE !! What for?? A webinar on 🌍 Ecosystem Services provided by Geodiversity in the Mediterranean Region: helping communities to address the environmental crisis and societal needs 🌍 When?? 🕔 28 November 2024 starting at 8:45hrs (CEST) Why?? 💡 Ecosystem services (ES) such as food provision, protection from flood events, or inspiration for science and the arts, refer to the contributions of natural ecosystems to human well-being. However, the physical components of ecosystems—geodiversity—that play a crucial role in ecosystems and their sustainability are frequently disregarded. The IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation team is supporting IUCN Member ProGEO - International Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage, to highlight the multifaceted role of #geodiversity in supporting ecosystem services in the region, highlighting the importance of conserving and managing geological diversity alongside biological diversity to ensure the #resilience and sustainability of #Mediterranean #ecosystems, bringing prosperity and well-being for all communities. Register to attend online and learn more about geodiversity in the Mediterranean and how important it is ✍ https://bit.ly/GeoDivReg More about it 👉 https://bit.ly/4hlro7A

"Channels for Adaptation: Harnessing Salt Marsh Bio-Geomorphic Complexity to Inspire Coastal Resilience." 🌐 Coastal Resilience Webinar Series 📅 27 September 2024, 2.00 pm CEST 🎙️ Speaker Loreta Cornacchia, researcher at Deltares (Marine and Coastal Systems Unit, Dept. of Data Science and Water Quality), Delft, The Netherlands Abstract Many ecosystems, often heavily modified by humans, face the pressing challenge of adapting to climate change. Coastal ecosystems, such as salt marshes and intertidal flats, are at risk of drowning if they cannot keep pace with sea-level rise. We developed a model to investigate how the emergence of complex creek networks during early salt marsh development affects the ability of marsh ecosystems to accumulate sediment, thereby compensating for sea-level rise. 👉 Find out more and register to attend: https://ow.ly/8SZQ50Te2F4 Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience UN Ocean Decade
