💧 French waters earn a European record. On 15 May, France’s Minister Delegate for Energy, Roland Lescure, announced the results of the world’s first-ever commercial-scale floating wind auction. The operation put up a single 250 MW quota for construction off the coast of southern Brittany. And as the WindEurope industry association points out today, it is a milestone for this technology segment. At least at European level.  Currently the old continent houses only small pilot plants and demonstration projects equipped with floating wind turbines. In other words, the European offshore fleet remains firmly anchored to wind generators with fixed foundations, despite ambitious national planning. “The floating wind is here to stay“, commented Pierre Tardieu, Chief Policy Officer of WindEurope. “The demonstration projects worked. Now it’s time to move on to the large ones. Some interesting discussions during a meeting and briefing with the German Ambassador to Ireland Cord Meier-Klodt in Cork two years ago – the pace of acceleration and deployment especially regarding floating offshore wind has not necessarily kept abreast of ambitions and forecasts at the time – there are still some catalytic actions and inputs required… Specifically policy and regulation change, and better access to finance. Some of these elements I am now working on with colleagues to change – namely the more readily available access to finance for deserving projects with real potential to reduce carbon emissions. New rotors, a sustainable tower manufacturing plant, and a production line for next-generation wind power drivetrains. 💡 These are some of the innovative wind projects funded by the European Union through the latest call of the Innovation Fund. It was great to chat to Rachel Millard and discuss Europe's journey towards low carbon energy amidst challenges like the Dunkelflaute.   The Baltic Eagle wind farm, a collaborative effort between Iberdrola and Masdar, stands as a testament to Europe's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. With its potential to power up to 475,000 homes, it represents the latest step forward in achieving our low carbon energy goals.   However, as the article rightly points out, the intermittency of renewable sources poses a challenge. Addressing periods of low wind and sunlight requires innovative solutions in energy storage and management and systems thinking. Technologies like pumped storage hydropower and the emerging potential of hydrogen offer promising avenues for overcoming these hurdles.   While there are hurdles to overcome, I am optimistic about the future of renewable energy. The recent initiatives by governments and the European Commission to subsidize and invest in green hydrogen projects are encouraging signs of progress. Moreover, advancements in storage technologies and interconnectivity between countries pave the way for a more resilient energy system.   It's crucial that we continue to foster collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to navigate the complexities of energy transition effectively. Together, we can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come. This article touches on the critical importance of working with local communities - citizen participation and to be key stakeholders within energy transition projects. “In order to scale up, however, Europe’s energy sector must shift its thinking away from centralised systems and big players towards decentralised systems driven by people power, with the right incentives and infrastructure in place” “Belgium has announced plans to nearly triple its offshore wind capacity to six gigawatts (GW) by 2030 with the construction of three new wind farms. For the first of these, set to begin this month, the Belgian government is encouraging community participation, allowing citizens to benefit from more affordable, cleaner electricity through their involvement” “Belgium ranks as the second-highest country in offshore wind energy production per capita. The country has incorporated citizen participation into the eligibility framework for its new offshore wind projects in the North Sea, encouraging greater collaboration between companies and citizens” “Using a regulatory framework, a legislative design, a regulation to enable this citizen participation and to oblige them to work together and not just compete but collaborate with each other is important,” the Belgium Minister for Energy, Tinne Van der Straeten said”

The German government has taken the next step to approve its planned Geothermal Acceleration Law. This legislation reflects Germany's commitment to becoming a leader in renewable energy. By 2030, Germany aims to increase its geothermal energy contribution to 10 TWh. Vulcan believes geothermal heat and power are the foundation of Germany’s #renewableenergy future and critical in achieving energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering sustainable economic growth. Through our integrated renewable energy and ZERO CARBON LITHIUM™ Project, we will deliver geothermal heat and power to local communities and industry, contributing to Germany’s green energy transition. At the WindEurope conference this year, we launched our joint paper with Ørsted that focuses on unlocking the potential of hybrid interconnectors.   Offshore hybrid projects involve linking two countries together via an interconnector at the same time as being connected to an offshore wind farm. These projects are crucial for securing Europe’s green energy transition – and yet, to date, only one such project has been realised: the Kriegers Flak-Combined Grid Solution, which links Germany to Denmark and was built by 50Hertz Transmission GmbH and Energinet. Our paper addresses the barriers standing in the way of unlocking the potential of such projects.   Our teams thoroughly enjoyed working with their peers in Orsted – they established a solid and collaborative relationship together.
