🚀 Day 2 of the LoGov Conference starting now 🚀 Our first day at the „LoGov – Local Government and the Changing Urban-Rural Interplay“ conference was filled with insightful discussions and dynamic workshops! 📣 The #RegionalInnovationValleys are selected! Commissioners Iliana Ivanova and Elisa Ferreira announced the 151 regions – including over 70 #ERRINmembers – at the European Committee of the Regions plenary session yesterday. The announcement was done one year after the launch of the call for expression of interest and the calls for proposals under EIE part of #HorizonEU and #I3Instrument of ERDF in 2023. Selected regions will now work to harness the potential of deep-tech innovation by enhancing the coordination and directionality of their R&I investment and policies towards key EU priorities, strengthening their R&I ecosystems and engaging in R&I collaboration with more and less advanced regions with complementary smart specialisations (#S3). We are thrilled to note that 73 #ERRINmember regions can now call themselves Regional Innovation Valleys. Congratulations to all our successful members, including regions of our Policy and Smart Specialisation Working Group leaders: Basque Country, Central Sweden European Office (North Middle Sweden and East Middle Sweden), Région Normandie, North-East Romania RDA - Brussels Office, Région Sud - Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Scotland Europa, Region Skåne (South Sweden), Regione Toscana and Wielkopolska. Among the 151 identified RIVs, 79 regions received the label based on answering the call for EoI and 72 regions are on track to become RIVs after successful participation in the calls for proposals – 15 projects will be granted a total of around EUR 116 million through the ERDF and Horizon Europe funding, and committed to co-fund another €77 million from private and public sources. Apart from funding, the European Commission aims to support these regions through community building activities, matchmaking events and targeted communication actions. New RIV calls under Horizon Europe with a total budget of EUR 40 million are expected in 2025! 💡 ERRIN has been closely following the RIV initiative, engaging in discussions and continuously supporting members in applying to the related calls through mapping, matchmaking and knowledge sharing activities, following high interest from the community. 🚀 Broadening Horizons in Research and Innovation 🌍 The European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation event, hosted within the HU24EU Presidency at the Council of the EU, provided an excellent platform to discuss increasing participation and broadening horizons in European research and innovation. 🎤 I was honored to join the panel discussion on "The role of excellent research support in improving participation in FPs – the practitioners’ perspective." Together, we explored key points: ✅ Research management and administration (RMA) in institutions and national ecosystems are critical investments. ✅ There’s no excellent research or innovation without excellent research management support. ✅ The exchange of best practices among RMAs is crucial to addressing gaps across Europe. ✅ Joining EARMA is a valuable step to foster collaboration and drive progress. 💡 Thank you, Virág Zsár and Ágota Dávid, for spotlighting this vital topic within the Hungarian Presidency discussions, and a big thank you to my fellow panelists for such a productive and inspiring session Massimo Busuoli Dirk De Craemer Petra Horvat Florence Ranson. 𝔼𝕦𝕣𝕠𝕡𝕖𝕒𝕟 𝕄𝕒𝕪𝕠𝕣𝕤 𝕊𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕚𝕥 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟜 This week, we attended the Mayors Summit in Strasbourg. The Mayor Summit is a unique conference organised by Eurocities to connect more than eighty mayors and vice mayors with the new #EuropeanParliament. 🤝 During the summit, mayors from various cities in Europe had the opportunity to exchange their views and insights during the roundtable discussions with MEPs. Ten different themes were discussed, such as local democracy, housing, mobility, and budget & cohesion policy. 📌 𝐀 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲? The EU’s ambitions cannot be realised without the direct involvement of cities and regions. A direct partnership between the local and European levels is essential for the future! 👩🔧𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭: On Tuesday, there was also time to visit Energy Hub R-Pas - a cutting-edge, low-carbon heating network in the Port of Strasbourg.  It was very impressive to see how major industrial players, such as the paper industry (Blue Paper) and steel mills (SteelWorks), are working hard to reduce their CO2 footprint and manage to connect the heat they produce to large urban districts of Strasbourg. And all of this is happening cross-border! 🏆 Three Interreg Europe projects are applying for #Regiostars2024! 🌟 The RegioStars Awards recognise projects that inspire and innovate, showcasing good practices in regional development. The RegioStars jury will select the winners, but the public will also have a possibility to choose their favourite among the finalists between 2 September and 8 October 2024. 💡 Our projects that are applying are CRAFTS CODE, MATCH-UP and ThreeT. While they were running, their goals were, respectively, to address SME competitiveness, environment and resource efficiency, and low-carbon economy.
