❓Q: What’s the definition of “ultra-processed food”? 💬 A: There isn’t one! 🤔 And this is why people are confused! 🍔 Is UPF even the right term to describe “heavily processed foods that, if consumed regularly in large quantities, may contribute to risk of chronic disease?” 📝 In my latest article, I argue that the mass confusion around UPF is a problem of language 🙂 I explain why we already have a better term: “junk food” Here, not only am I a nutritionist, I also pretend to be a terminology scientist, etymologist and philosopher. I have neither a qualification nor much experience in any. I don’t care. There are plenty of faux influencers masquerading as nutritionists! 😈 Look forward to usual comments like “of course you’re gonna say this; conflict of interest; blah, blah!” 🤪 🔔 Feedback on this topic encouraged! https://lnkd.in/egQXqn_D #foodprocessing #UPF #ultraprocessed

Little bit different kind of content than my usual one. But since I am getting into health metrics tracking with my Makros app, I thought I’d share this one. We need to be careful about absolute statements like “ultra-processed foods are bad for you”. They are not generally true. Notice the generally here. For example: whey protein doesn’t grow on trees yet we can agree it’s likely the best protein suplement we can get. Another example: I’ve never seen a creatine tree, have any of you? Probably not. There is decades of very strong scientific research to prove the benefits of both of the above. So just be careful with what you believe from the “stories” that are published online.

Last week the EWG released their Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen List! After working with Nichole Andrews, RDN, the past year I knew she would be a valuable resource to the media. I called her and told her about my idea to "newsjack" the lists and come back to NEAT for a single initiative. I was transparent with her-- we can't ever guarantee a feature but knowing how sought after her knowledge of evidence-based nutrition is from her time with us last year, I had a feeling she would get featured. She agreed, and within 12 hours we had a contract signed, a media list of over 500+ health/wellness reporters, and a personalized pitch with her thoughts on the dirty dozen list submitted. I WAS RIGHT. In less than a week, Nichole is already published on Healthnews as a trusted dietitian myth-busting this popular list that affects the purchasing patterns of so many consumers. The best part? This single feature has the potential to hit 1.25 million people! Check out the article below! Thank you Kimberly Drake for the opportunity! If you are a health/wellness reporter looking for a trusted resource that is evidence-based, send me a DM! I'd love to connect you with Nichole! At NEAT: The Agency we pride ourselves when it comes to trends and breaking news events. Whether you are a past client like Nichole, a current client, or even a prospective client, we are ALWAYS finding angles we can latch your business to so we can get you featured FAST. #publicrelations #pr #mediarelations #clientwins #pragency #eatingwell #healthandwellness #registereddietitian #nationalnutritionmonth #rd #rdn #healthnews #dirtydozen #cleanfifteen #ewg #pesticidesinfood #nutrition #organic

We live in a time when dietary claims abound. When good choices matter, as with diabetes care, it's important to follow sound, evidence-based recommendations. This paper is timely and provides practical reassurance that healthy dietary choices matter and are accessible. Well done!

Allahamdulliha 🎓 I am Thrilled to announce that I have successfully completed my MS in Food Science and Technology! My thesis, topic was *"Development and Evaluation of Zinc-Fortified Yogurt for Enhanced Nutritional Benefits,"* was a deep dive into the intersection of nutritional science and food innovation. A significant aspect of my research involved the extraction of zinc minerals from chickpeas, which naturally contain zinc but often in forms that are less bioavailable. By applying advanced techniques to reduce phytates and enhance the bioavailability of zinc, I was able to successfully fortify yogurt with zinc derived from chickpeas. This approach not only boosts the nutritional value of yogurt but also leverages sustainable, plant-based sources for fortification. This journey has equipped me with advanced knowledge in food fortification, product development, and nutritional biochemistry, which I am eager to apply in the food industry. I'm particularly excited about opportunities to contribute to public health initiatives through the development of fortified foods that can address micronutrient deficiencies. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my mentors, peers, and family who supported me throughout this challenging and rewarding experience. Here’s to the next chapter in my journey to improve health through food innovation! #FoodScience #Nutrition #ZincFortification #YogurtInnovation #Chickpeas #MSdegree #PublicHealth #Micronutrients #FoodTechnology

I want to read this book! I've heard Denise speak before - she is equal parts HILARIOUS and BRILLIANT. Death by Food Pyramid : How Shoddy Science, Sketchy Politics and Shady Special Interests Have Ruined Our Health http://amzn.to/1goLE3R (affiliate link) About the book: The phrase Death by Food Pyramid isn't shock-value sensationalism, but the tragic consequence of simply doing what we have been told to do by our own government - and giant food profiteers - in pursuit of health. Shoddy science, sketchy politics and shady special interests have shaped American dietary recommendations-and destroyed our nation's health-over recent decades. Regardless of whether you're an omnivore or vegan, research junkie or science-phobe, health novice or seasoned dieter, Death by Food Pyramid will reframe your understanding of nutrition science, and inspire you to take your health, and future, into your own hands.

🥑 Do you believe that an avocado shipped halfway around the world to the UK can provide the same level of nutritional and environmental quantum coherence as one picked fresh from the tree and eaten in its natural environment? The nutritional and energetic value of food is profoundly influenced by its origin and the environment in which it is grown and consumed. These fundamental concepts about nutrition are often overlooked by "food gurus" and "scientific experts," who focus solely on macronutrients and micronutrients, missing the bigger picture of how food interacts with the body on a deeper level. Check out the work by Dr Fritz Albert Popp... Now I am going to throw a nutritional curveball out there and say that, nutrition isn’t just the tip of the iceberg to health—it’s one fragment of a much larger, interconnected system, and eating avocados that have been picked early, kept in cold store, shipped to the UK and ripened at home provides as much nutritional benefit as my AI generated picture. If we look deeper into this concept we might understand why a one diet fits all approach is not the way forward when there is an environmental mismatch and this story might be linked to our magic mitochondria, microbiomes and mitochondria haplotypes. Over the years, I've pitched multiple op-eds to different outlets, all of which were rejected. Today, I am thrilled and grateful to share that I coauthored a guest essay with Mark Bittman for The New York Times. The topic is close to my heart. This past spring, I completed my master's degree, where I researched nutrition labeling as a public health intervention to provide consumers with essential nutritional information at a glance. Our essay advocates for mandatory warning labels on ultra-processed foods in the United States. These labels would highlight high levels of added sugar, fat, and salt, helping to improve Americans' nutrition literacy and drive informed choices to support health and well-being. Such labels are particularly important for individuals with less access to education and wealth, who suffer from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at higher rates. Since companies are unlikely to highlight nutrients of concern voluntarily, implementing warning labels on highly processed foods can educate consumers, change behaviors, and encourage the food industry to reformulate products.
