Psychiatric Times March 2024 cover story is a follow up to an exploration into the STAR*D flagship summary publication that I wrote an editorial about in our December 2023 issue entitled "STAR*D Dethroned?". We were delighted when the authors' of the 2023 BMJ Open Access article that reanalyzed the STAR*D data, AND the authors' of the original STAR*D 2006 Am J Psych publication agreed to submit their responses to the controversy created by my December editorial. This is the first part of the 3 contributions on our March 2024 issue cover in which I introduce the topic. I will immediately post the 2 responses immediately following this post. Part 1. Exploring the STAR*D Controversy:

High perceived naturalness in environments can foster creativity, And here is REASON Number 1 Attention Restoration: Natural environments, particularly those with higher perceived naturalness, are found to have restorative effects on attention. According to Attention Restoration Theory (ART), exposure to nature helps individuals recover from attention fatigue, which is often a result of prolonged focus on tasks that require direct attention. This restoration of attentional resources is crucial for creative thinking and problem-solving, as it enables individuals to approach problems with a renewed focus and energy. Yeh, C. W., Hung, S. Definitely on my reading list! Thanks Derek et al 🙏🏽 "Academic psychiatry can, and must, thrive. However, we are concerned that over recent years, the numbers of psychiatrists engaged in academic work, and the important profile of academic psychiatry within and beyond our specialty, have contracted." "Clinical services, as well as academic institutions, need to recognise the value of creating the space, time and support to grow academic activity, which will help address the retention challenges of a workforce vulnerable to burn-out. Academic psychiatry is everyone's business." #AcademicPsychiatry

Would you love to be able to evoke and call forth the innate wisdom, brilliance, and wholeness within your clients? You’ve likely heard of “Parts Work” techniques in therapy over the past years. It is as old as the fields of psychiatry and psychotherapy when Freud first began discussing the id, ego and superego parts of self. There has since been a myriad of theories and tools honoring these different inner perspectives and states that all humans experience daily. Relationship with nature within therapy offers us in-the-moment embodied experiences of metaphor, mirroring, diversity, wisdom, and so much more. When we bring the two together, Nature-based Parts Work becomes an incredibly potent mode of accessing, witnessing and uncovering the multitude of diverse inner wants, needs, beliefs and perspectives that drive our lives and experiences of the world. In our upcoming webinar, Nature-based Parts Work: Simple Tools & Techniques for Therapy, I’ll give a brief overview of a multi-model theory of parts work, and offer a few simple ways to collaborate with nature in support of finding greater clarity around the wisdom at the heart of each part of us. For those wanting to go deeper, I’ll briefly share about our upcoming Summer in-person training Uncovering Genius: Nature Based Parts Work. Mark your calendars for May 30th at 2pm MT. If you can’t make it live, no problem! We’ll send you a replay. Use the link below to register today https://lnkd.in/gacgx8p5

I read a book a few years ago called "The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine" by Jon Jureidini and Leemon McHenry. It highlights the need for individual critical analysis of clinical research to examine the robustness of the findings. It was an excellent book. This quote from the below article is quite alarming:- "the gravest claim made by Pigott and his team was that 931 patients who were included in the trial did not have documented evidence of depression by blind assessment (using the HAM-D)". The STAR-D study is one of the most cited and taught studies about the use of antidepressants in treatment of depression, the results claimed 67% patients were in remission at follow up - however, this article suggests signficiant flaws in the study that may undermine the efficacy of its reported results. Psychiatric medicine is more heavily scrutinised than any other field of medicine, it also poses implications for broader mental health professionals. I encourage you to have a read of the post below, it is eye opening.
In response to our March Psychiatric Times cover story "Exploring the STAR*D Controversy" we received a letter to the editor which I would like to share. It is written by Drs. Badre and Compton both who are practicing psychiatrists in San Diego.

Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, Stephanie Feals, Helen Riess, M.D. - This is an amazing few minutes where amazing kindred spirits dialog about the mystical power of love lives in each of us. In this clip, the transformational power of exquisite empathy is shared with us that is beyond words, what I would describe as a spiritual experience, the experience of in the moment healing. For those of you who are sure the world and humanity are spiraling down, you are, of course, right--especially from a systems point of view. And, there is reason for hope and even inspiration (in-spirit) that love will enlighten the darkness of fear and separation that plagues the minds of humanity and creates our many woes. We must also remember that this decent into darkness is necessary. Stress in systems and in the mind is what drives true transformation, which is always fear to love. We live in the most exciting times in human history. What is it you and I are being called on to do? 💙 #ALovingOrganization #LovingSystems #3DHealthcare #100MillionDreamersProject

High perceived naturalness in environments can foster creativity, And here is REASON Number 4 Fostering of Flexibility and Diverse Thinking: The article indicates that environments with high and medium naturalness were superior to low naturalness in terms of promoting elaboration and flexibility in thinking. These cognitive attributes are essential components of creativity, as they involve the ability to explore a wide range of ideas and adapt one's thinking to incorporate new and unusual perspectives. California’s Involuntary Commitment for Substance Use “Amid the ongoing debate over the utility of [involuntary commitment] IC as a tool to treat severe substance use disorders and legislation expanding IC for substance use disorders (SUDs) in California and other states, this article highlights the need to better study the use and effectiveness of existing legislation as well as to consider upstream interventions, such as expansion of community-based treatment models.” Weiner, S.
