Working with forest peoples to secure their rights
About us
Forest Peoples Programme supports the rights of peoples who live in forests and depend on them for their livelihoods. We work to create political space for forest peoples to secure their rights, control their lands and decide their own futures. Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) was founded in 1990 in response to the forest crisis, specifically to support indigenous forest peoples’ struggles to defend their lands and livelihoods. It registered as a non-governmental human rights Dutch Stichting in 1997, and then later, in 2000, as a UK charity, No. 1082158 and a company limited by guarantee (England & Wales) Reg. No. 3868836, with a registered office in the UK.

In 2019 the #Zero #Tolerance #Initiative was born in Geneva, created by #human #rights activists, and #indigenous #leaders fighting violence and killings in supply chains, many of which lead to our markets. #Quinto #Inuma #Alvarado was there in Geneva, co-founded the #ZTI and served on it's Steering Committee until, in 2023, exactly a year ago today, he was killed. "it is why we are threatened, because we are resisting" Quinto, 2022 Today, and every day, the ZTI and all its members remember Quinto and the very many people who have faced the same threats, the same violence and - for far too many - the same death. Today marks one year since the murder of Quinto Inuma Alvarado, who was a Peruvian indigenous leader and environmental human rights defender part of the Steering Group of the Zero Tolerance Initiative (ZTI). Quinto was brutally murdered in the context of his tireless defense of the human rights of his people and the collective protection of the lands of his community Santa Rosillo de Yanayacu. This communiqué is not only a tribute to his struggle but also a firm demand. #NewGuide - Indigenous peoples and forest peoples are frequently confronted with human rights violations and environmental damage caused by companies. The EU has passed two new pieces of legislation that could offer them options to recourse and remedy if the companies are linked to the EU: - EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) places conditions on the sale in the EU of commodities closely linked to deforestation - EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) imposes obligations on (very) large companies based in or operating in the EU to conduct human rights and environmental due diligence But how can #IndigenousPeoples and forest peoples use them to protect their rights? Last week during Oral Questions in the UK House of Lords, Baroness Margaret Ritchie highlighted a meeting with Indigenous, Afro-descendent, local community and local CSO representatives from Liberia, Indonesia, Colombia, Mexico and the Wampis autonomous nation in Peru, as part of a week-long consultation and advocacy visit organised by FPP and Peace Brigades International UK. Baroness Ritchie raised some of the issues faced by such groups, including corporate harms to their human rights and deforestation. Members of the delegation have experienced land dispossession, violence and other human rights and environmental harms from agricommodity production, mining and oil and gas extraction. Baroness Chapman of Darlington, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Jenny Chapman, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office agreed to meet with such groups to discuss the best approaches to address climate change. From FPP, we look forward to supporting such a meeting. The UK Government must take a holistic, human rights-based approach that includes: - Addressing the root causes and underlying drivers of deforestation and biodiversity loss by supporting their initiatives to secure land, territorial and resource rights of Indigenous, Afro-descendent peoples and other customary rightsholders. - Ensuring a decent proportion of the UK’s climate and nature finance goes directly and verifiably to Indigenous, Afro-descendent peoples and other customary rightsholders (or their self-chosen intermediaries) to support their land rights, self-determination and self-governance. - Introducing a fit for purpose UK corporate accountability law that places an obligation on UK companies and financial institutions to respect individual and collective human rights, as well as the environment, and achieve positive outcomes on the ground.
