Samoa are a great rugby nation but are constantly hindered due to financial mismanagement by their own union and World Rugby laws that are outdated and only put money in the pockets of the big boys. It's time to start shouting about padel's success in the sports pages. In the established nations like Spain and Argentina, this may already be the case, but it's a different story where padel is still bedding in. The professional side of the sport is definitely playing second fiddle to new venues and the growth of the sport. You can find padel in the lifestyle, news or business sections. This is great for overall awareness - but not great for the pros competing week in, week out who are starved of coverage. With more a than a decade as a sports journalist and more than 25 years experience in the sports industry, it's a tough nut to crack. Editorial space is squeezed, there are fewer journalists and essentially, the story has to justify being published - especially in the sports pages. As a dedicated sports pr agency - if we worked with these players and their representatives - we'd be actively working on this. We'd also be in touch with the likes of FIP and the LTA to understand what they are doing and what they can do. Padel is a minority sport along with the likes of squash and badminton and winter sports (look how much coverage that gets just so you understand the size of the challenge). Becoming an Olympic sport would certainly bolster the chances of getting in the sports pages - but that's at least eight years away. So, there really needs to be a better strategy and investment by all the stakeholders to make this happen.
