🌱 How can sustainable agricultural practices transform local communities and fight against environmental degradation?🌾 ✳Our Project RURALITIES partner 𝗜𝗙𝗔-𝗬𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶 in CONGO, initiated innovative agricultural strategies in Bakumu-Mandombe, #Ubundu. With an area covering 67,982 ha, their experimental plots are designed to support both environmental and economic growth for the ±65,000 residents in the region. Yesterday, we officially unveiled a partnership with Acorn Rabobank. It is on the back of an initiative with a commitment to sustainable agriculture practices and carbon market development globally. This aims to empower over 30,000 smallholder farmers with carbon credit access and general benefits of the adoption of agroforestry practices, further establishing our mission to drive sustainable agriculture practices to provide adequate support for farmers and impact rural communities. The partnership with Acorn Rabobank seeks to facilitate the sequestration of 1.3 million Metric Tonnes of CRUs and generate over $50 million for these farmers. The farmlands of these farmers across 9 states including Kaduna, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Jigawa, Niger, Nassarawa, and Kano states will regenerated and climate change mitigated, thereby increasing crop productivity and reducing the impact of climate related shocks leading to amongst others post harvest losses thereby enhancing carbon sequestration, promote biodiversity, improve soil health, and provide economic benefits to local communities. At a roundtable discussion hosted earlier that day in collaboration with AGRA, we had key stakeholders, including policymakers, industry experts, investors, and agricultural practitioners share innovative ideas and best practices for driving sustainable agriculture practices across these various touch points. A study conducted by Agramondis - Research and Consulting in 2023 found that agribusinesses involved in food production (could be a smallholder farmer or a large farm) lag in adopting climate adaptation strategies even though they are arguably the most vulnerable to climate change. Agtechs and agro-processors/manufacturers on the other hand implement adaptation and mitigation strategies such as mainstreaming CSA and GAP among the network of smallholder farmers in their supply chain and use of renewable energy for operations. This just in: USAID CATALYZE partner Lumbini Tea Valley Ceylon received the world’s first Reginagri group certification in the tea industry, which will facilitate access to new, higher-value markets for 1500+ smallholder tea suppliers and break new ground for Sri Lanka’s #tea cultivation sector. By emphasizing ethical standards and sustainability, the RegenAgri certification trains farmers to adopt and implement practices that contribute to improved soil health, increased biodiversity, and reduced emissions. This approach not only enables farmers to rejuvenate their soil, and boost crop yields, but access carbon credit markets and environmental subsidies for premium crop prices. 💧New Declaration: Vietnam Is Not a Water-Rich Country 🧏 🏝 For generations, Vietnamese people have been taught that Vietnam is blessed with abundant natural resources, including ample water. However, at a meeting on June 4th, Minister of Agriculture Le Minh Hoan for the first time emphasized that Vietnam is not a water-rich country and must change its Agriculture practices to cope with climate change. 🔂 Turning to the aquaculture sector, Vietnam's shrimp and pangasius industries achieved success with robust water replacement methods (30-50% of pond water daily). However, this approach has caused significant environmental damage. 🌿 Empowering Moroccan Farmers through Agroecology 🌿 📅 Date: November 28, 2024 🕤 Time: 09:30 - 17:00 CET 📍 Location: Fes-Meknes Region Réseau des Initiatives Agroécologiques au Maroc (RIAM), in collaboration with L’Ecole Nationale d’Agriculture de Meknès (ENAM) and the EU-funded NATAE project led by CIHEAM-IAMM, is proud to announce a comprehensive training on the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) for agroecological farmers in the Fes-Meknes region. This initiative aims to strengthen Morocco’s agroecology network by fostering knowledge sharing, mutual learning, and experience exchange. Agroecology is becoming crucial for tackling climate challenges and reducing reliance on food imports. Since 2018, RIAM has been developing the PGS label, with 60 farms across Morocco now certified under this trust-based system. Our training session will guide farmers in establishing PGS Agroecology Morocco, promoting sustainable practices, ensuring economic viability, and transforming mindsets towards environmentally friendly agriculture. Growing up, my mother maintained a granary called "Ekitara" in our native language, where harvested crops were stored. This traditional method was an effective post-harvest handling mechanism, preserving both food and seeds for the next season without the use of pesticides. The granary ensured that farmers had access to quality seeds for future planting and reduced food wastage, as they could safely store their food for up to two years. This contributed to food security and productivity by allowing farmers to rely on local seeds that did not require fertilizers or pesticides, helping smallholder farmers avoid extra expenses and maintain sustainable practices. Unfortunately, this approach is now often viewed as outdated, and many farmers have lost control over the seeds they grow. At Ujamaa Empowerment Network (UEN), we are dedicated to reviving these traditional methods by encouraging farmers to establish "seed banks" in their homes to ensure proper post-harvest handling. Yesterday's Financial Times Big Read echoed back conversations and strategies within projects ongoing in ASH Culinaria's charitable support of farming in the Niger Delta region and expands upon sustainable practices and intangible cultural heritage related to biodiversity within our past Special Reports for the Sustainable Restaurant Association. I hope those in Ministries of Agriculture/Development/Trade across the African continent read this article which informs how domestic food security can be assured and in the longer term, international trade can be facilitated. With so much arable land, indigenous food crop species and human capital to farm, the continent should not be a big net importer of food.
