My last day with these young retail leaders. Henley Africa. It’s been an incredible journey. We started in August 2023. They can hold their own anywhere in the world, and most probably teach those in what they call the developed world. It’s about the fundamentals of retail and being the best. It is also about transforming retail, being the leaders who will make it African. Recognising African values. The leaders who love Africa and its people and opportunities. Regardless of where you come from. Positive leadership. Creating opportunities. Making a difference. Supporting communities. More than world-class, African-class.

What madness drives us to exchange the security of a corporate role for the rollercoaster of starting our own business? I guess everyone has their own reasons, but for me it was a calling. The different leadership roles that I have been fortunate enough to hold with organisations like Compass Group, Sodexo, NOV, and DNOW showed me that the fundamentals of business don’t really change across sectors and industries. It’s all about retaining the clients you already have, winning new business, improving your bottom line, and optimising your cash flow. And business leaders know this of course. Their challenge is often that their day-to-day priorities keep them distracted from consistently focusing on them. It was for this reason that I founded True North Coaching - to support business leaders in improving the performance of their teams so that they and their organisations can reach their full potential. We focus on four key areas of business operations: - Winning new business - Renewing key account contracts - Optimising profitability - Improving cash-flow But we don’t just focus on the processes and structures behind each of these - we work with our clients to improve the performance of individual contributors and the effectiveness of their teams.
