Great new report from The Bridgespan Group. Its list of the "20 largest funders in Asia" adds to the depressingly small but slowly growing library of philanthropic research available to fund raisers in Asia. To understand the challenges philanthropic fund raisers in Asia face you only have to read Methodology section: "We relied on publicly available information, either annual reports or reports submitted to the government for compliance purposes ... In addition, we reached out to institutions known for their generous giving, but which do not publish data, to request information on their annual giving. These funders declined to share information with us ... Institutional philanthropies that do not publicly report expenditures were excluded ..." It continues: "We recognise that the annual giving reported for institutional funders likely underestimates the total giving from a source of wealth, as individuals, families, and corporates give through multiple avenues including personal gifts, CSR, other corporate foundations and/or private foundations, for which they might only publicly disclose giving for one or a few entities. After identifying a short list of the largest funders, we reached out to each of them to confirm their annual giving information. Once that 'magic' happens, you know you're off on a good start. And, interestingly, the magic always happens... What are the ingredients? In the end, it's all about the magic people in the room - working to create impact, to do it better, faster and therefore the curiosity to learn from and with each other. To collaborate, to seek solutions together. The #IFC Pop-up in #CapeTown, which The Resource Alliance organized in collaboration with local partner Relatomics Foundation, and Colin's team, is a beautiful example. Fundraisers, campaigners, communicators, change makers, leaders - all working in the social impact sector to create just, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable societies. 📊 New statistics on umbrella foundations in Switzerland 📊 For the fourth time, the Center for Philanthropy Studies (CEPS) - Universität Basel has prepared statistics on umbrella foundations in Switzerland. Of 28 umbrella foundations, 20 submitted their data for 2022. The fund capital of the umbrella foundations has increased by 36% to CHF 1.5 billion and therefore represents around 1% of the total assets of all charitable foundations in Switzerland. In 2022, 68 new sub-foundations (sub-foundations and earmarked funds) were established and 24 dissolved, which brings the total number to 459. CHF 76 million was distributed to 1,591 projects. The Limmat Foundation is the oldest umbrella foundation in Switzerland. In cooperation with proFonds. Dachverband gemeinnütziger Stiftungen der Schweiz, it has been organizing the workshop of Swiss umbrella foundations for 15 years. More and more philanthropists are recognizing the benefits of a sub-foundation as an alternative to an independent foundation.
