a very interesting read, concerning a deprivation of liberty in police custody. link below ⬇️
Eve Piffaretti and Professor Richard Jones examine a recent High Court decision that considered an application to authorise the deprivation of liberty of a person in policy custody. The ruling also looks at what approach public bodies should take where such person requires assessment under the Mental Health Act 1983, but no hospital beds are available. Among many other things ,we need to restore hospital care for those who need it. People with severe psychotic illness, as we know, do not often realize that they're ill. A brief hospital stay (days or weeks) allows us to meet with our patients daily, sort out diagnosis and begin treatment. Unfortunately we've shut down 90 percent of our hospitals, and replaced them with jails and prisons, where treatment is poor at best. One step we need to take is to abolish the Medicaid IMD exclusion so that hospitals can better afford to treat people with SMI. #treatmentb4tragedy #decriminalizeSMI
Sharing this letter that I collaborated on with Jerri Clark & Kathy Day after a family caregiver listening session at the last TAC AOT Symposium a couple of years ago. On this last day of National Caregiver’s Month, I feel it is appropriate to share again, as it provides important insight about what #FamiliesLikeOurs want not just AOT (Assisted Outpatient Treatment) providers to know, but really all providers of mental health treatment, judges, lawyers, law enforcement and first responders to know. Please take a few minutes to read this letter: https://lnkd.in/gEMRDCpZ And/or watch this short presentation we provided a little while later: https://lnkd.in/gWU-VqhW Please also share. I have been told by some of the folks across the country who read this letter that they printed it out and keep it posted in their offices to remind them that #FamiliesLikeOurs just want what every family who loves someone with a chronic, severe illness wants: Comprehensive, compassionate, effective treatment for their loved ones to give them the best chance for recovery, and #HousingThatHeals for those who really need it. #RipplesOfHope
