Happy Friday, Let’s flashback to one of the Tony Gee and Partners’s iconic projects, The Shard as the tallest building in the United Kingdom. Its proximity to a live rail corridor underscores the critical importance of maintaining structural stability and minimizing the impact of shoring excavation for its three-level basements on the transit infrastructure. Tony Gee provided expert analysis and review for this iconic project, focusing on: 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Ensuring the structural integrity of the nearby London Bridge Station. 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Limiting the effects of the Shard's construction, including its three-level basement excavation, on the railway tracks and equipment. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Reviewing permanent works, construction methods, and temporary works to identify potential impacts on Network Rail assets. The fully staged analysis of the basement construction was performed using PLAXIS 3D. The model data and input parameters were devised using reported heave measurements from published case histories and calibrated against heave recorded during the demolition of Southwark Towers. This model allowed us to predict movements at all parts of the adjacent structures at every stage of the works. Tony Gee's involvement in The Shard project showcases our commitment to delivering innovative and reliable solutions for the most challenging engineering projects. #EngineeringExcellence #TonyGee #TheShard #StructuralStability #RailInfrastructure #CivilEngineering #PLAXIS3D #InnovativeSolutions

The group leading the Interstate Bridge replacement project released a document that offers insights into how a new I-5 bridge between Oregon and Washington would change travel in the region. Select highlights from the analysis show tolling of the bridge is not expected to cause significant diversion to the Glenn Jackson Bridge, some areas of the Fort Vancouver site could be affected by the construction, and travel times during rush hour should improve if the bridge is built. Read the article on OBP at https://lnkd.in/gAGh6R2v. The Importance of Expansion Joints in Bridges 🌉 Have you ever noticed the gaps or seams on bridges? These are expansion joints, and they play a vital role in maintaining a bridge’s stability and durability. Expansion joints allow bridge materials like concrete and steel to expand and contract with temperature changes. Without them, the bridge could crack, buckle, or even fail due to the constant movement caused by weather fluctuations. Additionally, expansion joints help distribute weight and stress more evenly. As vehicles pass over, the joints let different sections of the bridge move independently, reducing stress buildup and preventing long-term damage from traffic, wind, and even seismic activity. Expansion joints may seem like small design features, but they are essential to keeping bridges safe, strong, and long-lasting. What other design elements do you think are key to making infrastructure durable? Share your thoughts! PFC Group #Engineering #BridgeDesign #Infrastructure #CivilEngineering
