👋 Meet Kirils Gončarovs at the 1st Summit of the European Community for Integrated Home Renovation Services! #eupeers 🗓 11th June 2024 The European Union aims to achieve a zero-emission building stock by 2050, which requires boosting renovation rates and energy standards now. However, the residential sector faces challenges like fragmented market offers, lack of homeowner capacity, and financial barriers. One-Stop Shops for home energy renovation provide integrated services to make the renovation process simple, attractive, and accessible. Recognized by the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), these shops are essential for achieving the 2050 target. Member States must establish one One-Stop Shop per 80,000 inhabitants or at least one per region, offering renovation advice and services to tackle energy poverty. Hundreds of One-Stop Shops are already operating across Europe, supported by thousands of organizations, including public authorities, energy agencies, suppliers, homeowner associations, energy auditors, architects, NGOs, and financial institutions. These actors are now forming the European Community of Practice, EU Peers, to strengthen and expand Integrated Home Renovation Services in Europe. Are you involved? This event is for you! The distinctive power of democracy: Following extensive preparations for the renovation of one of the pilot sites in our RINNO PROJECT, which involved the introduction of new and innovative technologies, the project was presented to the tenants for a vote. The outcome? A resounding NO. This highlights the challenges of implementing renovation projects in social housing in Denmark, where tenant consent is crucial. 🟢 We are excited to kick off 'Bankable Neighbourhood Portfolios for Energy Renovation (BanPER)’ as part of the EU-funded LIFE-CET-PRIVAFIN-2023 project cohort, working closely with our partners Ville de Marseille, MODUS AEDIFICANDI, Adaltys, AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development), and València Clima i Energia.   🏘️ The built environment is responsible for about 40% of Europe's carbon emissions, making this a crucial area for action if the region is to meet its climate goals. At its core, the JPI Urban Europe project EASIER aims to understand how we can shift people from private cars to more sustainable and active modes of transportation by studying the entire door-to-door journey. One of the key findings was that urban surroundings significantly influence perceived safety, mode choice, and public transport ridership. E.g., the project found that having houses, apartments, and workplaces closer to stations increases public transport usage more than placing parking lots near the stations. We had the opportunity to speak with Otto Anker Nielsen and Evelien van der Hurk, the project’s coordinators, who tells us more about the project and its results and outcomes. In Germany, our (Energieagentur Nordbayern) pilot partner is WBG Nuremberg which is the municipal real estate company of the city of Nuremberg. It was funded in 1918 and has grown to be the landlord of 10% of the cities population. In this role, the company feels the responsibility to thrive for both social and environmental sustainability. 📍🌍🥳 The building portfolio of WBG mostly consists of rented apartment buildings with over 20.000 apartments. For the MESTRI-CE analysis, a diverse set of buildings with different sizes, ages and needs for renovation has been chosen. 🏨🏦🏙️ One of them is the Jean-Paul-Platz 21-29. This is a building complex which provides 40 rental apartments with a total living surface of 4041 sqm. It was built in 1930, with a renovation of the building envelope in 1986 and replacement of windows in 2003. The Jean-Paul-Platz is one of the buildings on top of the renovation list within WBG. 🗿 🏗️ In the upcoming years, the Jean-Paul-Platz will get at least a new insulation, a new yard design and get connected to district heating. "The Global Urban Monitoring Framework was endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission in March 2022 for implementation as part of the Harmonized Global UN Systemwide Strategy for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and New Urban Agenda (NUA) and other regional, national, and subnational urban programs. It harmonizes existing urban indices and tools, including the widely implemented City Prosperity Index (CPI). The framework aims at ensuring thematic integration and interlinkages among various dimensions of development, disaggregation of data, and inclusion of groups that are traditionally excluded. It promotes working at different scales and functional urban areas, including ecological functional areas, enabling city comparability, and the possibility of more in-depth policy analysis."

Investing in public spaces can truly change the face of a city. Back to Cluj-Napoca for the European Urban Initiative City-to-City Exchange with Piacenza after two years from the end of the UIA project Cluj Future of Work, that I supported as expert, I found several remarkable changes which are positively affecting the quality of life of residents and city users. The implementation of ambitious projects, such as the pedestrianization of Strada Universității and the regeneration of the railway station area, is a key-element of an urban strategy aimed at making sustainability concrete for all. The wise use of national and EU resources and the adhesion to European networks and initiatives, such as 100 Climate-Neutral Cities, is a combination that resulted beneficial for creating a multiplier effect at different scales, showing how medium-sized cities can effectively design and implement integrated governance of sustainable urban development. In the URBACT Action Planning Network COPE I have the pleasure of facilitating the 8 participating municipalities in their proces of writing Integrated Action Plans. So what does that mean? Well, it means that we are sharing, inspiring, learning and training everything from using tools for stakeholder mapping, developing shared visions and the like to learning methods of participation and deliberation, community organising, facilitating citizen and stakeholder participation and then not least practicing the planning of making fun, educational and meaningful 2-day meetings.
