A recent report by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (Sasra) highlights financial health trends in several of Kenya’s top-tier savings and cooperative societies. The report, which was released after an analysis of the 2023 financial year, shows that at least five prominent Saccos, including Mwalimu National Sacco and Safaricom Sacco, have failed to maintain the regulatory minimum capital levels, raising concerns about their ability to weather economic shocks in the near future. https://bit.ly/3XKTyBe

(Trigger warning: humble brag ahead). I had the privilege of sharing a stage with SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter at a pre-IRFA Conference event hosted by Old Mutual Corporate and Old Mutual Multi-Managers. When I noted that I was nervous standing next to the taxman even though my affairs are in order, he walked over with a warm handshake. What an impressive individual. This is someone who could multiply his salary in the private sector but chose to return to the public sector to serve his country at a crucial moment in its history. He spoke insightfully about a broad range of topics, but was particularly passionate about two things: Firstly, the ongoing strides SARS is making in its digital and data science capabilities, allowing it to both improve customer service and tax collections. This is an investment that pays for itself. We all love to hate SARS, but an efficient tax service is one of the cornerstones of a successful economy and democracy. Secondly, the importance of building a savings culture in South Africa. Even though SARS will benefit from Two-Pot withdrawals, he urged people not to withdraw from their retirement funds unless absolutely necessary. #IRFA2024
