The 16 Days of Activism campaign shines a spotlight on the growing crisis of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) against women and the abuse of girl children in Kenya. While this period is essential for raising awareness, we must move beyond words and commit to sustained action throughout the year. Let us strive to create a society free from violence, one that values and respects every individual. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and make equality and dignity a reality for all. #16DaysOfActivism

#CDHAlert | In today's alert, Brigitta Mangale and Caitlin Freddy talk about standing in solidarity against gender-based violence and femicide. The annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign aims to raise awareness of the enduring and devastating impact that gender-based violence and femicide have on women and children, and our society more broadly. In this alert, we highlight some of the work being done by CDH’s Pro Bono Practice in Cape Town and public interest organisations to combat violence against women and children, not just during these 16 days, but year-round. While we, alongside our public interest partner organisations, are working towards yielding positive developments of our legal framework that benefit all women and children across South Africa, we need still consider what must and can still be achieved through collective action. Despite large protests mainly by women against #familyvilence - though this is a family issue - there has been no new money promised for on the ground services, to examine the way courts are used to re-traumatise victim-survivors or to educate men, women, families about preventing family violence. Listening to the speeches and comments, it is difficult to believe Australia is a multicultural nation. There is no mention of funding for culturally-specific family violence services, education, prevention, healing. Is there no understanding that family violence has to be addressed and prevented in a cultural context? This silence will harm us all. Should be 24x7x365 problem not only16 days. It should a mindset. Sadly, this violence against females cuts across cultures, countries, and classes. I am eternally thankful to my parents for drilling and teaching me about fairness especially to girls/women at a very early age....good kind of brain washing ;)
