'Paying more for sustainable cocoa’ is the theme of the fifth World Cocoa Conference, taking place in Brussels next week. The first conference, in 2018, concluded with the Berlin Declaration, which stated: “the cocoa sector will not be sustainable if farmers are not able to earn a living income”. Later that year, Beyond Chocolate - the Belgian Initiative for a more sustainable cocoa sector - was established. Since then: 🍫 Over 70 Belgian companies in the cocoa sector have committed to enabling living incomes in their value chains by 2030 🍫 15% of farmers in the value chains of the Beyond Chocolate signatories are covered by holistic living income strategies 🍫 The pilot projects financed under the initiative have reached over 12,000 farmers 🍫 New living income products have appeared on Belgian shelves. These are valuable first steps that reveal a new market dynamic. As coordinator of both Beyond Chocolate and the Dutch Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa, IDH will ensure that ambitions on living income remain high and more impact will be generated. With sustainability at the core, Puratos Grand-Place proudly became a sponsor of Cocoa Association of Asia. Gricha Safarian, Managing Director of Puratos Grand-Place Indochina, emphasized the true essence of sustainability in his opening remarks. "Sustainability," Gricha said, "is about growing your business without harming the environment or communities around you. True sustainability means paying for what we use.” For the first time, 16 farmers from eight countries - Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Uganda, Bolivia, and Vietnam - came together in the Farmer Network at the Cocoa Association of Asia (CAA). This initiative was created to give a voice to the people who are often at the heart of the cocoa industry but rarely heard. The farmers discussed six key topics, guided by Selene Scotton: Sustainable Farming Practices, Innovative Technologies and Methods, Climate Change Adaptation, Market Access and Trade, Community Development and Farmer Cooperation, and Regulatory & Compliance. Representing Vietnam were: Ms. Nguyen Hong Thuong, Director of Nhat Tam Cooperative from Dak Lak Province, and Mr. Dong Tien Hung, Director of A1 Cocoa Company from Binh Phuoc Province. Alongside the Puratos Grand-Place team, they actively contributed to the discussions, highlighting Vietnam’s practices in cocoa farming. As we look ahead, we anticipate positive changes within the cocoa industry. By continuing to collaborate, share knowledge, and embrace innovation, we can ensure that cocoa remains a thriving, sustainable industry. #Puratos #PGPI #CAA #FarmerForum #Fruit #Farmer #Forest

🌍 Burundi’s Coffee Farmers Rising to the Challenge of Sustainable Trade! 🌍 In the scenic hills of Ngozi province, #Burundi, coffee farmers are embracing the future of trade through the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). This journey isn’t just about compliance—it’s a powerful commitment to sustainable coffee production. At the forefront is Bokim Beni Nihoze, founder and CEO of Trade Legacy Burundi. Recently, Bokim attended a hands-on training led by ITC’s Green & Inclusive Value Chains program as part of the EU-EAC #MARKUPII project. The workshop focused on equipping producers with practical tools like geolocation for coffee plots, traceability measures, and sustainable practices to align with EUDR standards. Bokim shared, “The training has been invaluable, offering a clear roadmap for sustainable practices. It’s our responsibility to protect Burundi’s resources and ensure that our coffee remains competitive in the European market.” His journey underscores ITC’s mission: empowering farmers with the skills to navigate complex regulations, preserve resources, and open doors to new markets. This collaboration exemplifies how sustainable trade can empower small producers, drive community growth, and ensure our coffee is truly deforestation-free.
