Interesting study highlighting the dilemma often encountered by engineers in management positions. We often hear "Take off your engineering hat and put on your management hat". However, as engineers we need to bring our technical expertise to the argument and not to ignore the input/advice from the technical teams. The statement from Marcia Baron on company loyalty is impacting "It is a sad fact about loyalty that it invites...single mindedness. Single minded pursuit of a goal is sometimes delightfully romantic, even a real inspiration. But it is hardly something to advocate to engineers, whose impact on safety of the public is so very significant. Irresponsibility, whether caused by selfishness or by magnificently unselfish loyalty, can have most unfortunate consequences."

What could be the reason our country struggles to produce senior engineers? Many who consider themselves senior engineers actually aren’t. They haven’t solved enough problems or been exposed to significant challenges. I believe two major criteria are essential for becoming a senior engineer: 1. Solving mid-to-large-scale problems 2.
