Some years ago, while working on a major project, I was shocked to discover an example of modern-day slavery buried deep within the supply chain. I learned that some workers had not left the site in months, working continually without breaks. This illustrated to me in real terms, where modern slavery can exist even in the places we least expect it. Extractive industries face profound human rights risks impacting workers and communities. Transparency, accountability and continually verifying Standards are met are at the core of respecting Human Rights – confirming outcomes are right, that people experience the dignity and freedoms we all deserve. As such, it is a privilege to take part in Anglo Americans Human Rights Working Group, driving pragmatic governance that really moves the dial and lives up to the UN Guiding Principles to "Protect, Respect and Remedy" Human Rights. Is Human Rights on your radar? Are you sure you would be able to spot a potential issue? Can people speak up openly where you work? How do we know? And, some every-day service providers such as cleaners, nail bars, clothing (sold online at impossibly low prices) and car wash facilities, can be examples of critical labour rights and modern slavery risks in action. Care. Be vigilant. Speak up.
