#sustainability BEHAVIOR IS AS DIVERSE AS IT IS INCONSISTENT The popular festival Rock Werchter in Belgum rightly promotes their Go Green policy: “… special attention for campsites, too much garbage left behind … we endorse circularity … join us on the road to zero waste.” Visitors could get a recycle kit and free drinks for full garbage bags. The organizers with these lofty initiatives must have been very disappointed. Their visitors appeared largely oblivious to their sustainability initiatives. The campsites were left with an incredible amount of garbage, which the organizers and their volunteers were apparently supposed to clean behind the backs of the visitors. By force of habit, we have perhaps come to believe that this is ‘normal’ after a rock festival. I see nothing normal in it however. It makes my hope and confidence in civil environmental care plummet to a minimum. Many people talk about #sustainable living and not flying and no meat and no car driving and no fossil fuels and no #co2, but appear quite willing to pollute their direct surroundings in a gruesome and entirely avoidable manner with everything including oil-based plastics. It is no different along roadsides and in parks. Saying that something is important appears not the same as acting on it. I view sustainability as an integral notion with many different practical aspects, such as #renewability, #recycling, #waste reduction, #environmental care, #biodiversity and #energy saving. The common factor is a mentality, a way of living and caring for your surroundings and environment. The various practical aspects come together in this mentality, and I fear that people who carelessly throw their garbage on the ground will not direct their behavior towards #energysaving and #co2reduction. For me, sustainability starts and ends with not polluting your own nest and that of other living creatures.

I always say you can't cherry pick on what you do and don't. It's a life's journey.
