Now it's the fast ferries turn. This is demanding, but also important, because diesel-powered fast boats are the form of transport with the largest CO2 footprint per passenger kilometre", says Ole Jakob Aanes, area manager at Ruter As. "The ferries have unfortunately been somewhat delayed from the shipyard, partly due to capacity problems and component shortages and partly due to time-consuming innovative solutions on board," says Bjørn Egil Søndenå, Head of Express boat / Fast Ferries, Norled. "The high speed ferries of the future must be emission-free. At the same time, they must be able to achieve sufficient speed, and they have such a short dwell time that it is not practically possible to fully charge the batteries from land. San Francisco has a range of public transit options, from BART to the iconic cable cars. And starting this week, the nation’s first hydrogen-fueled commercial passenger ferry will also be in the mix. “It’s all electric drive,” Joe Pratt, CEO of Zero Emission Industries, told Fast Company. “What that means is you don’t have the engine noise. You don’t have the vibration. It’s kind of like a really big sailboat that’s just cruising silently through the bay.” Pratt, whose company designed the boat, added that its sole byproduct is water vapor: “It’s the only vessel in the world where you can actually drink the exhaust.” Beginning Friday, the 70-foot catamaran, called the MV Sea Change, will take up to 75 passengers along the waterfront between Pier 41 and the San Francisco Ferry Building. In a significant move towards environmental sustainability and operational efficiency of Klaipėdos uostas/Port of Klaipėda, the Klaipėda Port Authority has announced the acquisition of two new hybrid pilot boats, set to join the port’s fleet within the next year and a half. The contract for these innovative vessels has been sealed with Estonia-based shipbuilding company, Baltic Workboats Ltd. These state-of-the-art pilot boats are designed to operate round the clock, ensuring seamless navigation for ships entering and leaving the port. Even in adverse weather conditions, with waves reaching up to 5 meters and winds up to 30 m/s, the boats will maintain their operational efficiency. SUSTAINABILITY: Liberty Lines launches high-speed ferry with Rolls-Royce #mtu hybrid system Italian shipping company Liberty Lines has launched a hybrid fast ferry in #Trapani, #Sicily, powered by a mtu hybrid propulsion system from Rolls-Royce. The Vittorio Morace, built by the Spanish shipyard Astilleros ARMON, S.A. and designed by Incat Crowther, is said to be the world's first IMO high-speed craft (HSC) hybrid fast ferry of this size and has been classified as a Green Plus ship by the Italian classification society RINA. The 39.5m ship has a capacity of 251 passengers and reaches a speed of over 30kts. The new member of the fleet, named after the founder of the shipping company, is the first of nine ferries that will operate between Sicily and the neighboring Aeolian and Egadi islands as well as between the Italian mainland, #Croatia and #Slovenia. Gennaro Carlo Cotella, CEO of Liberty Lines, said, "We chose mtu hybrid systems because we want to minimize the environmental impact of our new fleet while not compromising on the high speed and range of our vessels. The Italian shipping company Liberty Lines ceremonially launched the world’s first hybrid fast ferry of this category and size in Trapani, Sicily. The ferry is powered by an mtu solutions's mtu hybrid propulsion system from Rolls-Royce. The 39.5-meter-long ship has a capacity of 251 passengers, reaches a speed of over 30 knots, and will significantly reduce the impact of ship operations on the environment. The “Vittorio Morace,” built by the Spanish shipyard Astilleros Armon and designed by Incat Crowther, is the world’s first IMO HSC (High-Speed Craft) hybrid fast ferry of this size and has been classified as a “Green Plus” ship by the Italian classification society RINA. The battery-electric part of the drive is used for locally emission-free driving in the harbor area and as a booster. CO2 emissions are reduced by the particularly efficient mtu Series 4000 diesel engines, which can also run on renewable diesel (HVO, hydrotreated vegetable oil). Its use can lower the CO2 footprint by up to 90 percent.
