What's the issue with school surveillance? Surveillance technology like Vape Detection tech is used is many Minnesota school districts, and now includes facial recognition software. This raises concerns over exclusionary discipline. Disproportionate monitoring has been linked to higher suspension rates among African American students, feeding into the school-to-prison pipeline. Read the Vape Detection Report Here: https://lnkd.in/gstE3zcP It's time to talk about real solutions, It's time to talk with young people about the solutions they want to see - Let's start with reading this new report so we can all start on the same page and build from there! #Technology #AI #Tech #Survalliance

Like many lately, in my work I've been reflecting on GenAI and its impacts, especially on young people. Back in my cybersafety expert days, post-teacher, I wrote a chapter for GenNext - looking at how the smart phone had been a game changer for potentially risky behaviours. It began by quoting a Telephony Magazine edition from 1905 - I was illustrating how tech has long disrupted all kinds of human behaviours, and while each new disrupter can seem like a whole new world, and scary, many of the underlying human traits are the same. The White House on Monday unveiled a range of efforts across the federal government to protect children’s privacy and safety online, an announcement that comes amid a recent surge in image-based sexual abuse fueled by artificial intelligence. Multiple agencies are looking at how they might respond to threats that children face online, according to an Office of Science and Technology Policy release, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which is planning to assess new ways to estimate and verify ages online and has created a new evaluation system for age estimation algorithms. Additionally, the Department of Education released guidance on AI and education technologies to help inform nondiscriminatory uses of the emerging tech. https://hubs.li/Q02HY3vz0

Great to see that public sector productivity is going to be a big feature of the Budget on Wednesday! It's clear that public services need to be fixed, but more spending: - isn't achieving results (growth to 45.3% of GDP in recent years hasn't improved services, many have got worse), and - isn't sustainable. With the tax burden set to be 38% of GDP in a few years, a post-war high, we can't continue to grow public service spending quicker than we can grow the economy. Patrick King's research for Reform Think Tank last year outlined the scale of the challenge to transform public services and make them much more efficient. More spending can't just paper over the cracks of inefficient services, it should be done when we're confident it is going into a system which is highly productive. This is central to our work at Reform this year, get in touch if you have ideas and want to discuss them!
Our new plans for public sector productivity will deliver up to £1.8 billion worth of benefits. Including: ✔ Saving thousands of hours of police officers' time by delivering on the Police Productivity Review ✔ Upgrading over 100 MRI scanners in England with AI so that over 130,000 patients a year will receive faster test results ✔ Saving up to 55,000 hours a year of admin time in the justice system by digitising jury documents ✔ Expanding the use of AI to reduce fraud in the public sector, saving £100M for the public purse Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWiZBt27

🚨 Stockton is stepping up its game with vehicle-mounted cameras and AI technology to tackle code violations like overgrown lawns and graffiti! 🌳🏠 The city council just gave the green light to a contract with City Detect, aiming to boost efficiency and help officers spot violations quicker. 🔍 After a successful test run earlier this year, where the tech nabbed thousands of violations in just five days, it's clear that this innovation is making waves. 🌊 While Stockton is leading the charge, other cities are also hopping on the AI bandwagon for similar initiatives. 🛑 However, not everyone is on board with this high-tech approach. Some residents are raising concerns about privacy. 🕵️♂️ What are your thoughts on using AI for code enforcement? Let's start a conversation! 🗣️ #StocktonInnovation #AICodeEnforcement #CommunityEngagement

With the advancement in tech and AI, at ever growing annual rates of speed, we must ask ourselves, when the tools are at our fingertips for at home R&D, who is developing the governance and restrictions? Is that even possible? While it poses some threats, it should also serve as a reminder, that there are still avenues of raw development, as well as individuals who consider street justice. Even a thread is deadly in the hands of a person who knows how to wield it. Now imagine if that thread consisted of nano electronic carbon fiber with morphing shape functionality. Just something to consider on a dull Friday night.
