One of the many things I like about this article is its focus on value and not on cost. Focusing on meeting children’s needs is undoubtedly the best way to not only ensure children are safe and reach their full potential, but it’s the most responsible way to spend the public purse over the long term. A well commissioned mixed economy is so important. In some parts of the U.K. LAs, consortia and IFAs are working well together to develop services that complement one another, not compete. Unfortunately that’s not a universal picture and there’s still too much focus on competition and working in silos. That’s not helping sufficiency or access to foster homes. Having had a national role in tracking IFA commissioning and contracting arrangements for almost 15 years, I am seeing an increasing number of commissioners and providers recognising the benefit of trust and collaboration. When LAs own in house services, commissioners and providers are genuinely trusted, empowered and supported to create the best receipe from the ingredients they collectively have, that’s when children’s needs can be best met. #trustiskey #complementnotcompete #partnershipwithpurpose #valuenotcost
